The earliest poem in the English language is called The Dream of the Rood (= Cross),
it was carved in runes in the 8th century on the Ruthwell Cross in my part of Scotland
(it was part of Anglo-Saxon Northumbria)
In it, the Cross speaks - just as in that lovely piece above -
about how it was cut from the Forest and made to carry a great hero named Christ,
how it trembled as it was soaked in blood.
