One thing I love is the way he portrays his victims naked and vulnerable among a large crowd of hostile thugs. This poem, inspired by Crucificateur and illustrated with some of his images from 'The Gift', explores how that may feel.

I’m the One


See the pointing, shouting, crowd
Hear them swearing, scoffing, crude
Bawling, baying, scenting blood
But
I’m the one in the nude.

Hear the whip, the stinging thong
Hear the whistling, cracking lash
I have done no deed of wrong
Yet
I’m the one being thrashed.

 

[Wragg]

See them follow, eager, keen
To miss this sight would be a loss!
They love the blood, they love the screams
But
I’m the one with the cross.

Beneath the load, I slip and fall
The soldiers, angry, gather round
They kick and punch and swear and call
For
I’m the one on the ground.

Below the hill, I look up high
In abject terror, stand and stare
They’re readying a place to die
And
I’m the one who’ll be there.

We’ve reached this dreadful place at last
Where I am to be crucified
The soldiers, busy, hurry past
Yet
I’m the one terrified.

They stretch me out, I cry in vain
My final pleas for mercy failed
The hammer strikes, I scream in pain
Now
I’m the one being nailed.

They drive the nails through wrists and feet
I struggle like a woman crazed
I howl in panic and defeat
Then
I’m the one being raised.

The cross, it lurches into place
And I am thrown from side to side
With agony upon my face

I’m the one crucified.

The spear takes me; a mercy thrust
My lifeless body hangs forlorn
They lower me down to the dust

Brilliant writing for art I always thought would be better with a narrative!!!
