The penthouse (1)
Celine visited her college mate Karina. The two had met in a reading about Urban Gardening and Karina had told Celine that she had a small roof garden.
At the indicated address, Celine found an old nineteenth-century factory building. Karina lived at a penthouse under the roof. She greeted her visitor friendly and let her enter her loft.
Celine admired the apartment with the sloping walls. The roof struts were open. It looked quaint. Only in one place was the wall straight and vertical. Behind it, Karina explained, was the room where the engines of the old elevator were housed.
On this vertical wall hung three hanging flower pots on hooks that were hit into wall. Two flower pots hung at eye level. The middle one hung much lower down. That looked weird, Celine thought, but she did not say anything.
She let Karina guide her around the apartment. Her classmate showed her the kitchenette, the shower room, the sleeping area and a door recessed into the roof, which led out to the roof. There was a spacious roof terrace.
Celine uttered a little cry: "The roof garden! Wow!"
The terrace was filled with containers of different sizes, in which plants of all kinds flourished, from flowers to strawberries and various types of vegetables. There was also salad and pea bushes.
"I told you that I'm doing Urban Gardening," Karina said. She shook her black hair. "I like to sit at the little table out there to learn. Then I feel in the middle of nature."
"That's fantastic," Celine said.
"Afterwards we can sit outside," Karina suggested. "We can cook tea in the kitchen corner." She went back inside. Celine noticed that Karina was not wearing shoes. Inside, the girl walked barefoot across the polished parquet floor. She showed Celine her work corner with desk and computer.
Between two support posts of the attic there was a stretch rod.
"My exercise machine," Karina said. She jumped up and grabbed the pole. Her bare feet dangled over the wooden floor. She did some pull ups. Then she dropped to her feet. "I do that several times a day. That keeps me fit."
Celine got under the rod. She measured with her eyes and jumped up. She got hold of the pole and shuffled it until her arms were spread wide. So it was hard to hold on. She tried a pull-up, but failed.
"It will not work," said Karina. "You hang on the pole like a crucified one. You can not do a chin-up with arms like that. You can only try to endure as long as possible."
She grinned at Celine: "You can not make it long. Your hands can not hold your body weight for long. It would only take longer if you were tied."
"Yes," Celine said. "I can already feel my strength slacken. I have to let go immediately. "
"Unless you're tied down," Karina repeated.
Celine dropped to the parquet floor. She pointed to the horizontal pole, "That would not last. At the bar, I mean."
Karina was suddenly serious: "Do you want to give it a try? Being tied, I mean."
Celine looked at her college mate. She knowed Karina since two weeks. From acquaintances she knew that Karina often had weird ideas.
"Like I said, that would not last," she said. "The bar is too smooth."
"It does not have to be here," Karina said. She looked Celine in the eyes, then nodded in the direction of the elevator room: "There on the vertical wall. You could do it on the hooks."
Celine looked at Karina. The girl was serious, she realized. "You want to crucify me?" She asked. She made it sound like it was something really funny.
"Why not?" Karina said. "Just for trying. You would feel how you are held. When your arms get tired, you do not fall down because you're tied. "She looked at Celine very intensely:" Say: do you want it?"
Celina had to swallow. She did not quite know what to say. Karina had taken her by surprise. She had not expected such a suggestion. "Yes ... I do not know ..." she said. "How is that supposed to work?"
Karina pushed her gently towards the vertical wall with the three hanging flower baskets on the wall hooks: "Quite simply: we remove the hanging baskets and I tie you to the hooks. Above the outstretched arms and down I tie your feet. Then you know how it feels."
She put an arm around Celine's shoulders. "Do you dare? Just try it. You will see, it will be interesting."
Celine hesitated. She had palpitations. Karina wanted to tie her up. Tie up! Celine was in the mood to give it a try, but she would have bitten off her tongue rather than admit it. She was shy.
"It's not difficult," Karina said. "You stand with your back to the wall and spread your arms. I bind your wrists right and left firmly. Then I tie your feet and pull them up until they reach the hook in the middle and get stuck there. And than you are crucified! Then you would know what that feels like. "
