'Idiots ... but useful idiots.' Similar phrases were used by various US journalists and politicians in the inter-war years, and it re-emerged in the now familiar form early in the Cold War.

Absolutely right. It's fake. This phrase "useful idiots" (полезные идиоты) is sometimes attributed to Lenin. But you will not be able to find evidence in any of the volumes of the complete works. Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin has nothing to do with this ephimism at all.

Still used over here in the media today…depending on who you listen, watch or read.

IMDB has no bio for her and only two film listings. She was married to groundbreaking African-American filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles during the 1950s and is the mother of his three children. According to Melvin's Wikipedia page, she was German. Her only other film listing is Love Kills(1998) which was written, directed and starred her son Mario Van Peebles.
