I wonder why he was called “Longinus”… :eek:
The name may be from Greek λόγχη "longkhé", 'a lance'. He's first mentioned in the apocryphal, 4th - 5th century, 'Acts of Pilate'. In fact, the Gospels don't suggest that the soldier who pierced Jesus' side was the same as the centurion who declared 'Surely this was the Son of God', though later tradition lumped them together.
