ANASTASIA OF ROME CRUCIFIED AND FLAYED ALIVE
The apostle Paul was beheaded a short distance from Rome, on the road to Ostia. Under the cover of the night, Anastasia, a wealthy matron of noble birth, collected the apostle’s relics and had them honourably buried. This activity did not pass unnoticed. The woman was arrested and brought before the emperor Nero, then jailed. She was asked to renounce the faith of Christ, but she remained firm in her confession of faith. So she was sentenced to be suspended to a cross to undergo mutilation. Her breasts were removed and she was partially flayed alive.

Leopards, unlike lions, kill by suffocation, holding pressure on the victims throat until she dies form asphixia. This kind of killing method surely gave an exciting show for the attendants at the Coliseum, as the victim take much longer to die, moaning and kicking uselessly...

DOROTHEA OF CAESAREA TORTURED TO DEATH AS A CHRISTIAN REBEL
Little is known about the biography of Dorothea. She fell victim to the persecution of Diocletianus in 311 in her hometown, Caesarea in Cappadocia, when she refused to sacrifice to the Emperor. She was consequently tortured and sentenced to death. What exactly was done to her is not quite clear; some reports mention whipping, toches, breast torture, iron hooks and dipping into boiling water.

Little is known about the life of Saint Elvira, what we know about her is written in an ancient book of the Catholic Church called 'Acta Sanctorum', which means 'Acts of the Saints'. What little is known about Saint Elvira is also written on the back of a print that was distributed in Barcelona. The text reads: "Saint Elvira, whose country or the circumstances of her martyrdom are unknown, was a victim of paganism and was sacrificed in Austrian Germany".
The image of St Elvira reveals a little of her history. Through her symbols, we know something about her. The crown symbolizes virginity. So we can deduce that St Elvira died a virgin. The cross means that Elvira was crucified to give her soul to God. And the brazier at St. Elvira's feet indicates that she suffered the torment of fire before dying.

Just allow me to point out that in soccer football, there are degrees in hat tricks :
-one player scoring three goals in a game.
-one player scoring three goals in one half of a game
-one player scoring three goals in one half AND (if the team scores more than three goals in the half) all three in succession.
The last one is of coarse the 'purest' form.

Hmmmf, raised in a cricket-mad household only 3 consecutive goals should count as a hat trick, if they’re not consecutive then it’s “only” a triple, not a hat-trick
I thought the term was unique to Cricket but I absolutely have a fund of ignorance on the subject of soccer…

EUPHEMIA OF CHALCEDON SCOURGED TO DEATH
Euphemia was born about 288 AD in Chalcedon (today: Kadıköy, now a quarter of Ístanbul, Turkey) into a wealthy, aristocratic family. She and her parents had become Christians and lived a pious life, using their wealth to support the poor.In 303, during the era of Diocletianus, Euphemia was requested to make a sacrifice to Ares, the Greek god of war. She refused and was promptly arrested. In prison she was cruelly tortured, but she survived this unscathed (some of the executioners became Christians when they saw this, and had to be killed, too). Her body was lacerated with a spiked wheel, but her wounds healed overnight. Men sent by to judge into her prison cell to rape her saw her protected by shining beings and fled or became Christians. Finally she was scourged to death.
