It is rumored that Edward II of England was killed by his wife and her lover at Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire on 21 September 1327 by being held down and having a red-hot poker inserted inside his anus. This was done so the body could be displayed mostly naked to prove that he died of natural causes and was not murdered. The only covering on his body when displayed was a cloth over his genital's and of course since he was lying on his ass...........

That was, of course, an allusion to his sexual proclivities - it's probably not true, but the kind of rumour that would go viral.

That story was told to my class at school by the guide on a visit there. We were about 14-16 so there was much giggling and not a few pale faces at the thought.
