Nobody knows this. It's somehow tied up in the logic of these places where it seems that any attractive woman is automatically the object of suspicion.
Barbara is confused! She has done nothing to deserve such torment! It has not occurred to her that being burned at the stake can be entertaining for the spectators with all the pageantry with the preparation.
