I have a little experience with such devices. Including a ‘tip top’ table as a makeshift pony with a couple of chairs - one each side and books so that if I was on tiptoe my slit was just clear of the edge. As my legs tired I was forced to sit on the edge until it came too uncomfortable (slightly cushioned by cotton panties) and was forced to raise again on tiptoe. Until my legs tired again and so the cycle began again.

Initially I could use my hands to push up, but after a bit they were tied behind me. So I could not ‘cheat’.

Then my panties were cut at the sides and pulled off so my weight was on my bare slit. The edge working into me. As Eulalia said the least worst position was slightly forward . And the rather panties were used to gag me.

Gentle reader I assure you an hour seemed like a day!

another interesting variation is the turkish twister.
As far as I understood, there is the usual beam to ride but also two additional beams where arms and legs are fixed and can be used to "twist" te body attached to the machine.

now I jump to China, where two types of "horses" were used to punis prostitutes and adulteresses.
