Amistad was indeed a brilliant film but I don't think it went down too well in the US. Possibly because the British were portrayed as the good guys for a change. I think I've mentioned this before but to bring slavery to an end in the UK the slave owners were paid vast sums of money by the Government. The British tax payer only finished the repayments on the huge loans just a few years ago. Many famous people in the UK are rich today because they inherited those slavery bribes. The Treasury let that slip recently then quickly covered it up.
In British North America, immediately following the American Revolution, the British also bought the freedom of American slaves who were somehow associated with Empire Loyalists and who were moving mainly to the colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. At the end of the Revolution, New York City still had a lot of loyalist residents and was occupied by British troops. In vacating the city after the Treaty of Paris (through which the Americans say they won their independence and the British say they were granted independence), Sir Guy Carleton refused to surrender the "human property" to the Americans. Instead, he created a registry so that owners of slaves "might eventually be paid for the slaves who were entitled to their freedom". Names of former owners and amounts owed were duly entered. It is suspected that many of these "debts" were never paid. :D

See Saw, Barbara Moore,
Her tight little wriggles for Master.
Soon her ass will be glowing and sore,
Because she did not swallow faster.
Hickory, dickory, dock,
Who knows what events may follow,
Barb may be stripped,
Barb may be whipped,
But will she kneel, suck and swallow?
You two ought to know by now that ridiculing Barb is like taking a big risk. Retribution may not be swift, but it’s always delivered with a vengeance!
