There's confusion between the water torture and water boarding.
When a girl suspected of witchcraft was put to the water cure, the method was like this.
Stripped naked and very tightly to the ladder tack, cords inexorably tightened until cutting through her tender flesh as struggled against her bonds.

Once immobilized, a funnel was forced into her open mouth, and a long knotted clout was pushed through into her throat.
Up to 4 gallons of filthy water was poured into the funnel.
The poor creature had no choice but to swallow gasping for air as her nostrils were blocked with wooden pegs.
As she was filled with water torturers beat her belly or placed a very heavy weight on her stomach.
After awhile the naked girl was hung by her feet to vomit and if her answers weren't adequate the torture began again
