Yesterday, according to my calendar, was the 'world day of peace'. General Curus Lemay once said you cannot have peace without power and for more than a generation peace was defined by M.A.D. (Mutually Assured Destruction)

During that time millions lost their lives in 'police actions' and 'scrumishes', and maybe a 'civil' war or two.

I feel safer here...

Ah.... General Lemay, who once said, "Nuke the commies until they glow, so you can shoot them in the dark!"

Agreed.

Yet we must admit wars have their own effect on economy and social life. Some say that having some sort of 'enemy' is a key element of life, not only for individuals but also for groups and nations. Humans need some form of 'us' they feel they belong to. A much used way to define such an 'us' is framing it as the opposite of a 'them'. This works in particular if 'they' can be framed as a threat to a common interest. The image of 'them' need not reflect reality to be effective, reality can be bent to make 'them' more abject and threatening, and the common interest need not be real either. It works as long as those-to-be-united believe in the image and in the interest.
This group is based on a common interest: a positive and much stronger drive to unite that has no need for a 'them'. More over: since the common interest is one outside the general public consent, the participants to me appear as 'free thinkers' who have learned to look beyond the hype and the illusion of the day.

Which of course again establishes some form of an 'us' and a 'them', which appears unavoidable.
QED
