Bad luck
This time seniorita Carmen was unlucky.
The fact that she had a fight in a cigar factory with another worker was an ordinary thing.
The fact that she hit her with a knife was nothing new in Carmen's case. She didn't really brag about it, but she had already sent two or three people to the other world.
The bad luck wasn't that this time she used the knife in a place full of people, and a guarded one at that. So far, she often stole from such places and no one caught her. She escaped several times after being captured.
The bad luck was that the cigar factory was not guarded by a patrol under the command of Don Jose, but by Sergeant Lopez and his men - all of them devoid of any sensitivity and treating the woman as a commodity. They captured her after the incident, refused to be charmed and took her bound to prison.
Her bad luck showed itself for the second time in prison: a few days earlier, all the free cells had been occupied by arrested men, and the women's cells were too crowded to squeeze anyone else in there. In the old-fashioned way, Carmen was chained to a wall in a courthouse corridor full of guards and court officials. There was someone watching her all the time, and the lockpick was taken away from her as soon as she tried to use it to open the shackles.
On the occasion, she was kindly informed that her victim had died: Carmen, always so precise with her knife, had stabbed a little too far. Bad luck.
This time she was responsible for murder, an intentional one at that - because she took a knife with her even though she didn't need it for work... and the knife looked like a weapon, not a tool.
To make matters worse, the very angry judge had already been there and quickly got to work: having several dozen simple cases, a dozen very complicated ones and one that promised to be long-lasting, he started with the most obvious: Carmen and the murder without serious reason, committed deliberately and in the presence of witnesses, committed by an underworld person with a very problematic past indicating recidivism. In addition, the accused was stuck in chains near the passage, which was disturbing and made a bad impression on the citizens. The trial took little time and the death sentence was clear from the beginning.
Carmen was also flogged because, after the verdict was announced, she insulted the judge and all the courts in the country with words that were not suitable for literature.
Carmen came across a garrote. Bad luck.
Prosper Merimee did not write a famous short story. Bad luck is the result of bad luck.
George Bizet didn't create an opera. No films, performances or recordings were made. The performers' careers did not flourish. Viewers and listeners were not moved. Bad luck...
Bad luck for everyone.
Only Don Jose was somewhat lucky: he had a peaceful career in the army in a period without wars. Only he didn't know what he was missing out on and therefore he didn't feel any happier.
