Crucified males

It is interesting to question if there was an erotic element to the Ecce Homo event. But the thing we will never know is whether Christ was shown to the people still naked after his scourging with just the robe thrown over his bloody shoulders & the crown of thorns rammed down on his head. It is possible that he was shown like that before any of the punishment or scourging began, the robe thrown over his own clothes. In one account in the gospels (I cannot remember which) it was at Herod's palace where he was stripped & dressed up as a mockery king, then sent back to Pilate, a journey through the streets again. So possibly he was paraded through the streets back to the judgement hall naked & only wearing the robe & crown. In other gospels it was the company of soldiers who stripped him & dressed him up. It is all very confusing...if it actually happened at all as the gospel writers said, after all they were quite some time later.

If there was an erotic element it is small wonder the crowd shouted for crucifixion, they surely would have wanted more. There was of course political desire to kill him as well, but maybe it was easy to manipulate the crowd.

Very interesting point you brought up regarding the mockery probably started to happen in Herod's palace. I read an excerpt of a sermon (?) that theorized about it. To me it is certainly plausible scenario. Imagine King Herod, decrepit disfavored by the people, facing-off with this supposedly self-claimed King of the Jews, young, charismatic and hugely popular. This rabbi refused to show him magic trick, refuse to speak to him or even acknowledge him, such defiant attitude. It would have irked him and his posse to no end. Some beatings should make the rabbi talk, even beg for mercy. No? Not even one word. He will lose his face if it ends like this. He has to gain the upper hand. Some show will please his company. Let's dress him like a king, a robe, a pretend specter, a crown, made of wreath of leaves (the roman soldiers, determine to outdo the joke, later replace it with thorns). Here is the robe your majesty. Wait, it does not go well with his peasant clothes. Take it off, take it all off. Derisive laughter and catcalls filled the palace as the strapping King of the Jews was slowly divested out of his humble clothing. He finally stood in the nude in front of Herod and his company, surrounded by his foes. Herod drapped the flowing red robe himself. The whole time, Jesus looked down, his face is flushed with shame. Herod grabbed him by his chin and looked him in the eye and winked. *There, much better , isn:t it, King*. The palace exploded with applause and laughter, and the mocking intensified. After several more rounds of verbal (and some physical) abuse, Jesus was sent back to Pilate.

Flash forward to ecce homo scene, Pilate presented the king of the Jews to the people of Jerusalem. There was big crowd in front of the praetorium, people from all factions. All watched in initial shock at the rabbi's state. For people who weren't present earlier, they heard rumor going around before that the idolized rabbi, the savior of the people has been arrested, tried and treated like a clown by King Herod and dragged down on the streets with very little clothing. Some of his closest followers refuse to believe it. *no way it was Jesus, he would strike down the entire palace before letting that happen*, they say to themselves. But now, they saw it with their own eyes. Their beloved teacher, stood stark naked between fully-armored Roman soldiers. Only covered by skimpy rag which must have been an old discarded soldier's robe, and crown of thorns on his bowed head. Welts and bruises all over his body. Adoration turns into dissapointment, turns into resentment, turns into burning hatred and rage. This man has betrayed their trust and hope. Shoutings and chaos and insults filled the air. Then the Governor booming voice silence them 'What shall I do then, with this man!'.

Note: sorry if the above writing offend some, I tend to let my imagination runs wild. If this is not consistent what the forum content should be or I went too far, feel free to delete it and let me know.

That is a great scenario of what could have happened Xinlonx, & it makes a lot of sense as Herod was the first to feel the resentment at some upstart claiming to be a king (a claim made not by Christ himself though). The Priests & clerics who wanted Pilate to execute Jesus might have been happy with a stoning, a hanging, or a scourging to death - any way that would remove him permanently. Herod was supposed to be fairly insane so the dressing up thing seems likely to be his idea & for his pleasure - the idea of Jesus having to undress himself in front of Herod & his entire court is a heady scenario to imagine. The mockery & burlesque just spiralled on from there with the roman executioners adding their own sadistic inventions.

This also suggests that Jesus was mocked & suffered the shame of being so attired, led through the streets pretty well naked, & shown to a huge crowd before he was scourged, so he was not in any way weakened at that stage, the humiliation would have been more acute than later when agony was his number one concern.

I apologise a bit for going on about the Bible story but it is the only at length account of a crucifixion, & it is a tremendous story! The way you describe the build up Xinlonx would make a terrific movie narrative. It would also make it particularly poignant the terrible mental suffering Jesus had to endure with the humiliation as well as what he underwent with the physical torture.

I would like to add Xinlonx that I don't think you should worry about what you wrote offending some. I worry that my images might, that is why I try not to make them a particular reference to Christ, just any poor person sentenced to crucifixion 2k years ago, my Ecce Homo ones are an exception.

But the sort of writing you did above is nothing more than what religious & Holy figures in the Early Church pored over & discussed at enormous length to work out the orthodoxy of the message priests were to put out. That is why they came up with the flimsy Virgin's veil idea to sidestep the nakedness problem. They sanitised the whole story resulting in billowing loincloths & mild expressions of inconvenience on Christ's face as he hung on the cross. The Church didn't really want the people to know the ugly truths of such a horrible ordeal & death.

I could go on and on regarding Jesus' passion and crucifixion story. I have dozens of scenarios running through my head on details on the various events. As I mentioned, I have been obsessed with this story since I was a wee teen. I researched and read a lot of articles, books, sermons on it, and any new ideas added to my imagination. Your articulate writing adds so much dimension on my simplistic own though. Love it! I would love to exchange more ideas or inspiration if you or others are interested, perhaps in PM if it is more appropriate.

I think the beauty of the gospel stories is that they don't all tell the same narrative, well Matthew & Mark seem pretty similar. But the differences do invite speculation on our part. If they all said the same we would just accept that.

What puzzles me is the amount of times Jesus has his clothes removed then put back on again. Something must be wrong there. For example in Matthew Pilate has Jesus scourged then handed over to be crucified, the soldiers gather round, strip him & dress him in the robe & add the crown of thorns. Why did they have to strip him unless he was dressed after the scourging? Then after the mocking Matthew says his clothes were put back on & he was led away to Golgotha. There he obviously had the clothing removed yet again because they divided his garments. Confusing!

Luke is the one which says Herod started the mockery, & seems to suggest that from then on Jesus was only dressed with the robe thrown over his shoulders. More logical.

We'd better step aside & let the rest of this Male Crucifixion thread resume. Too much in-talking of the Bible story. I'm trying to think of a more general comment to shift the subject.......

Philx, Would love to see your full story about the crucifixion of Jesus. That little snippet in the other thread is just teasing... How about the rest?
