Yes, the Siberia to Alaska hop would certainly have been much quicker! and maybe this is a more likely explanation.
But at the end of the ice age to the beginning of the early bronze age the Earth's ice cap extended right down to Northern France, so it would Also have been possible to travel East to West and reach the States using this route - I think this journey may have been worse tha flying 'economy' though
