Thats it? I'm not sure what I was expecting to be honest, since her arms are tied to a T, but her legs are tied to a T as well.
It looks like a double patibulum cross which is popular in depictions of Japanese Haritsuke crucifixions, but I'm not sure that it has an official name.
Perhaps it has a name in Japanese? :)

Spent some time digging, couldn’t find any specific terminology for the parts of a Japanese cross. Perhaps there are better researchers out there.

I think the X shape and the 3rd picture are my favorite crux depictions. especially the 3rd picture in this set.

Quoom also did a series on Jolanda de Almaviva, and I never heard of her. So many years after I first saw Arcimboldo's take I finally googled her name.

She’s a popular comic book character by an incredibly popular artist, Milo Manara, who I’d also never heard of. Serves me right for losing interest in comics during the Ford Administration. So I checked if he’s ever done any crux art, and the examples below are the closest I could find.

Saw this Muellmann48 fellow over on Deviantart. He posted only these two a few years ago, where they caught the attention of Bobnearled, Emily, and eventually, me. About 15 minutes ago.

Riveted my attention, actually. :very_hot:

I don't know if there was a specific name for the cross either.
The two cross-beam version (Is it proper to call it a patibulum if it's not Roman?) was used for men, like this guy from some time in the 1860s:

Women were displayed on a Latin style cross as a concession to modesty:

"Display" would be the correct term, since the Japanese cross was a means of exhibiting the criminal before and after execution rather than an execution device in itself. The actual execution was done with spears; as seen above.

Two WelshWebb studies of an obscenely cruel punishment being inflicted with obscene cruelty. But with the exception of lady who’s the center of attention, there’s a festive air to the proceedings. Leaving one to ponder just what the hell did she DO to put everyone in such a jolly mood?

volunteered?

And probably regretting it, judging from the look on her face!

Hmmm. Depends on whether this is a grin or a grimace.

Looks like a manic grin to me. I’ve always wondered A.) What was she smoking? and B.) Where can I get some?

I’m pretty sure the lady on the ground being nailed to her cross a la Last of the Pirates is a repost. No matter. She’s one of many examples of Yusseby's fondness for this theme.

View attachment 572737This one is just plain cruel ... why is he taking those things away? Are they in short supply? Does he need them somewhere else?

Barb, until a few minutes ago it hadn’t occurred to me that the dude was taking those things out, but rather thought he was putting them in. But you’re right, he wouldn’t brace his foot against the stipes to do anything other than pull them out.

Which wouldn’t be cruelty, but a kind of backhanded mercy. With their weight supported they could linger for days.
Unsupported, their legs would quickly tire and, unable to push up to breathe, they’d asphyxiate within a few hours.

So. Death from suffocation in hours instead of days.

A cruel mercy.

An ode to Spring by Andyman. Insects droning, birds nesting, it's crucifixion season!

I don’t think I’ve yet posted these suitably wretched Yusseby ladies.
