Unlike in modern courts, Tree was not allowed to meet with his clients after he was hired. The state considered them guilty so why bother letting him develop a case that might get them off?
At their trial, Barb and Messaline are brought to the courtroom in standard prison garb- naked but for the cuffs around their wrist- and escorted by a team of prosecutors. Usually defendants aren’t allowed attorneys so the state had to be sure this Tree fellow did not get them freed.
As the two women are led into the courtroom they are greeted with loud and lewd jeers by the spectators.
The judge, who agreed with most of what was being shouted, did nothing to suppress the outburst.
