This is a little back story for Barbaria's avatar....

Thinking

Thinking while she waits to die
What else to do when nailed on high
Than struggle there and wonder why
The pain lasts so long?
Why she’d left an ordered life
To live with bitter war and strife
To cut out the Romans with a knife
And right a great wrong.

Thinking how, time and again
She’d fought the very best of men
And always triumphed over them
Until this last fight
How her wits and spoken word
Had meant her voice was always heard
And how she’d led her rebel horde
Against Roman might.

Thinking how her daring band
Had driven Romans from her land
Until no Roman dared to stand
Against their raw hate.
Thinking how her people, free
Had known they’d not for ever be
Without the Roman tyranny
And short was their wait…

Thinking how the Romans came
And soon her country was aflame
The Romans knew which one to blame
For their former loss
And so Barbaria waits to die
Naked, bleeding, nailed on high
But with defiance in her eye
On her Roman cross.

Thinking how, despite the pain
Her life had no way been in vain
She would do it all again
Contented was she
Naked, but she felt no shame
She’d done it all in Freedom’s name
And Rome would one day lose the game
And all would be free.

Thank you for writing this Wragg! It is a lovely "back story" for my avatar, and I am flattered that you chose to do this. But beyond that, it is an excellent piece of writing. The verse both carries the story and builds wonderfully. It captures so much and I do love the ending. Nice work!

Thinking, Part II

Another cross, some way away
Another girl, in agony
Thinking of a better day
When they’d fought so well.
Thinking how the two of them
Had bravely fought such feeble men
The two of them had beaten ten!
As they gave them hell!

Thinking of men's naked fear
As she and her Barbaria
Had slain the Romans far and near
Crushed them into mud
They’d seen her standing, golden tressed
And not been frightened, or impressed
Then felt her steel inside their chest
And seen their own blood!

Thinking of their victory
Of life within their country, free
Life lived as it was meant to be
A life of true bliss!
Thinking of her lover, true
Entwined in passion’s golden hue
As Barb’s sweet love just grew and grew
For her Little Siss.

Thinking of this glorious past
They’d both known well it couldn’t last
But neither realised quite how fast
The Romans would come.
Now she hung here, nude, alone
Despite the pain that made her groan
She smiled at the times she’d known!
Her life had been fun!

OH POOR SISS....:rolleyes::)

So how does this poetry thing happen Wragg? Do you just sit down and beautiful words come out?:D. My jealousy of your talent can not be contained! These are so good! The story of Barb's avatar is lovely and so emotional! I can feel her pain and loss while she hangs on her cross! The bitterness of failure after knowing success and being so close to freedom is palpable. Then the ultimate and final humiliation of not being allowed to die quickly or with dignity. So gritty and also strangely arousing.... Please keep up the amazing work Wragg!
