In at time distant from now, a man named Tree had bought a large amount of land. It was far more than he could maintain, so he set up small farms and centralized villages, selling the land’s rights to the buyers. Besides, anything more than to supply his stills really was more work than he cared to undertake at his age.
Tree did not do all the work on his land. He has hired hands and even ‘indentured servants’, women working for him in trade for a piece of land or a house in one of the villages. Tree does get side benefits beyond the servants’ work.
In this region it is also legal to have slaves. Slaves are acquired through the (very questionable) court system or are ‘spoils of war’, women captured in battles with neighboring states. Slaves have to be motivated to do their chores. In is hard work Tree demands from his slaves.
Some, while not enthused with work, have realized it is better not to piss of their owner.
But Tree has to remind all the slaves that in winter there is not much work that needs to be done yet the slaves have to be feed even when there is little work to be done. Every fall he randomly chooses a slave to be ‘thinned from the herd’. This is not a honor a slave would wish to have bestowed on her.
Every fall, he picks a slave to be ‘thinned’ or, more bluntly, hanged. The slave is placed on a stool or a horse’s back and is noosed. Their support is removed and they are hanged wearing only the rope binding their hands and the noose they are hanged by.
Last fall he hanged one slave that thought she didn’t have to work as hard because she slept with Tree on numerous occasions but she was mounted on a horse and wore her noose for her last posed picture.
The hired hand would guide the horse away and, after thrashing for more than ten minutes, she died hanged by her neck.
A few of the workers watched her last dance as she hanged. Tree would have missed the slave (she was rather good in bed!) but he has other issues to take care of.
