Not my usual style- A row of the wives and other relatives of the conspirators were laid out along the side of the desert road leading to the town. This was to humiliate, inflict pain and also serve as a warning. After a couple of days they would be taken down and sold to the highest bidder.

The price is a minor issue- it is the humiliation of being sold that is important. Indeed, if they are cheaper they may end up as farm slaves rather than indoor slaves.
