Ancient Chinese Women Prisoners

Go to CruxDreams.com
What is the name of the movie with the topless woman on the wooden horse?

I'm a big fan of the style of Pixiv artist ForYou (or 4U, or 张某). Here are some recent images of Chinese prisoners facing public execution by a range of methods. Plus a bonus black-and-white crux themed image. Not sure what the narrative in the first two images is as the scenes appear to deliberately mix modern and ancient settings and clothing:

his style is really unique and of great quality! big fan here too

There are loads of Chinese execution movies online, with a good collection of them at Motherless, uploaded by user Silvia_String. Most of them have modern settings and are rather repetitive: arrest of glamorous young woman for drug dealing, prison scenes with heavy chains, interrogation chair and/or police rope bondage, public humiliation, escorted to a deserted bit of forest, executed by headshot.

This one is a bit different in that it has an ancient China setting and makes a pretty good fist of showing all the ritual steps of a lingchi exection (allowing for the restrictions of Chinese fetish videos, i.e. no nudity and zero budget for special effects). We see the convict in a cangue, judge's verdict, judicial rope bondage, humiliating donkey ride (we don't see if the dildos are present), tied to a post, bits of flesh being cut off and thrown on the ground with blood splatter, convict's reaction shot, finishing with the presentation of the head on a plate. Video is HD, but unfortunately the sound appears to have gone missing:

I am curious about the long, pointed signs that are tied to the victims backs in all of these Chinese videos. I assume they indicate the victims' crime and punishment. What is their origin?

Thanks, an interesting video, many nice touches. I especially like the idea of my hair being tugged up and tied to the post - something even my fertile fantasies haven't thought of! (still #4 - though it seems to have slipped down when the butchery begins, #5)

Yes, that's as much as I can find, they proclaimed the prisoners' crimes. But I haven't found the Chinese name for them in English-language sources online, or any historical details. Re-enactments suggest they may even still be used.

And that may not have been the custom all over China or even for very long. We in the west forget how big geographically China is and how diverse "Chinese" culture is. Diverse enough that there are 2 officially recognized "Chinese" languages, Han and Mandarin.

We make the same mistake with "Rome". The Republic was established around 510-509 BCE (and the Roman polity existed as a kingdom before that) and the western part of the Empire fell in 476 CE. That's almost 1,000 years of a continuous lineage of government. Yet in out fantasies the Legionaries are all wearing the same armor with the same weapons for those 1,000 years ... that didn't happen.

In Imperial form the Chinese government ran from about 221 BCE until 1911.

However it would make a lot of sense for a statement of the criminal's "crime" to be carried along to their execution, much like the sign that was allegedly affixed over Christ when he was crucified. If you want to make a point thru terror you make it and a sign that says 'They did this' followed by a public and brutal execution gets the point across very nicely thank you as to what will happen to you if you do "That".

Quite - and although we get the impression of a highly-disciplined, totalitarian state, in many regions that western reporters etc. rarely reach, justice is probably still pretty rough, old, traditional ways probably persist.

I have no idea about the origin of such a practice. But if you feel curious about what it says, there's a way to find out.

I don't know if there's any Chinese OCR that can work reliably with an image that is not a photo scan of a document.

But you can always search individual characters on one of the online dictionaries like this, which supports handwriting input.

For example, the text in the above screenshot reads "謀夫淫婦張...". According to the dictionary. the first four letters probably mean "a licentious wife who cheated her husband" or something like it.

In pre-modern industrial autocratic societies any concept uniformity is a myth. A ruler's authority extended exactly as far as the forces directly under his command could move in a single day and still fight a battle at the end of that march. Any extension of that authority was based solely on the loyalty of those who controlled military forces beyond his immediate reach.

As long as the taxes were paid and nobody was trying to defy the national authority I'd bet good money that the central government really didn't give much of a hoot about what the local customs were.

Even today in our modern highly centralized and monitored world we can cite examples of neighbors who don't follow the same lifestyle\customs we do (example people living off the grid).

Also methods of punishment can take along time to die out.

We know of examples of crucifixion (Chinese style) as an official punishment were still being carried out as late as 1905 or so.

We also know that during the French period of the Vietnamese Wars that French POWs were impaled by the Vietminh as a form of execution and that during the Chinese-Vietnamese Border war of the late 1970s that captured nurses were found naked, with their breasts either pierced by or wrapped in barbed wire impaled on stakes by Chinese forces (or at least the Vietnamese claim).

The world is incredibly complex no matter how hard some people try to simplify or standardize it in their minds.

I am a little wondering what info you are looking for of the signs? I could help if you need.
