Alice, Daughter of Barabbas

Little did they know that these enthusiastic people were time travellers from the future, specifically a group from something they referred to in passing as "CF".
Thereby creating a subtle change in history - which was of course the future, then. As a result we today talk about the Gospel of @Wragg , the Gospel of @phlebas , the Gospel of @bobinder and the Gospel of @Apostate .:icon_writing:

This great chapter:thumbsup: reveals how this could happen!

They tied her arms to the cross-piece, and forced her out into the narrow, crowded street. Alice groaned beneath the weight.

DoB 019.jpg

Behind her, she was aware that two men would be keeping her company when she reached Golgotha. Briefly, she wondered what they had done, but she soon forgot them. She had troubles enough of her own.

It had been a struggle to get through this crowd only yesterday, with a basket of fruit as her only burden. Today, staggering beneath this beam towards an agonising death , in a state of near terror, Alice could barely make forward progress.

Alice had managed barely fifty yards of the journey to Golgotha when she saw her aunt. Her mother’s sister, Deborah, and she was standing right in front of her.

DoB 020.jpg

“Alice! What on earth are you doing? I hope you are carrying that for someone else?”

Alice came to a halt. “Aunt Deborah, you have to help me, they are going to crucify me!”

“Stand back, woman!” bawled the centurion. “Get out of the way!”

“Just a moment, officer – this girl is my niece!” Aunt Deborah was not a woman to be trifled with at the best of times. The centurion looked faintly shocked, but he remained in a temporary state of near eruption. Deborah didn’t have long.

Crucify you? Crucify you? Why are they going to crucify you, Alice?”

“A Roman attacked me… I killed him, it was an accident, please Aunt, you have to believe me! It wasn’t my fault!”

“She stuck a knife in his heart,” added the centurion, wondering why he was having this conversation, “some ‘accident.’”

“Aunt! Please!”

“You stupid, selfish girl! Look at you! Twenty-three years old and you haven’t worked out that the Romans take what they want, and do what they want. Your poor mother – the shock of this will kill her! I must go to her now! And I hope, while you are hanging from your cross, you will think about what you’ve done to her! Go ahead, officer – do what you have to do!”

“Well, thank you kindly, ma’am,” said the centurion, with exaggerated deference, as Alice recoiled from the shock of her aunt’s words. She was completely alone in the world. There was no sign of her father, her aunt didn’t even care that she was going to be nailed to a cross, and now, suddenly, this cross seemed to weigh three times as much.

“Tell mum I’m sorry…” she wept. She staggered forward. Deborah watched her for a moment, then the enormity of what she had done struck her. Of course Alice had fought back. She would have done the same. It could have been her carrying a cross to Golgotha. Were her harsh words to be the last that passed between them? She ran forward, and grabbed Alice’s tattered tunic.

DoB 021.jpg

“Alice! Forgive me! How could I have been so cruel? I’m so sorry!”

“I’m too young to die, Aunt!”

I know you are, my sweet girl… let me get you some wine to dull the pain! Officer? Can I get her some wine? It’ll only take five minutes! I only live a short distance away!”

“Oh, Aunt, thank you. Would you? I’m dreading the pain! Please, sir, let me have some wine?”

“We’re not waiting!” The centurion had had enough. “We’ve dallied long enough already! No wine! Come on! Get moving!” He encouraged Alice forward with his club.

There was no way she could make any faster progress. People were all round her, shrieking at her, taunting her, one man asking the centurion if he could take her home tonight and return her for crucifixion tomorrow.

Another yelled, “You have to be nude to be crucified! Get those clothes off!”

“Leave me alone!” Alice didn’t need reminding that she would probably be stark naked before much longer.

The centurion threatened the worst offenders with his club, but by now Alice was finding each step more difficult than the last.

DoB 022.jpg

“Alice!” Deborah’s voice, coming up the street behind. She’d been to get wine anyway. “Alice! Wait!”

Alice paused, but the centurion shoved her forward. “Stop that woman!” he ordered a legionary, “we’ve dithered enough already.”

The legionary swiftly intercepted Deborah, stopping her in her tracks.

“Let me through, you idiot! ALICE! Wait!”

The centurion turned. “On your way, woman. No comfort for this prisoner. She has already attempted to delay her own crucifixion by walking so slowly!!”

“Have some compassion, man!”

“Compassion?” he sneered, “We’re about to crucify her! How do we crucify her compassionately?”

“You are a hateful man! I hope you rot in hell!”

One questions Deborah's desire for any compassion for Alice. Does she not understand Alice will be soon stripped naked and nailed to a cross? Does she think she can spare Alice from her fate???

If I were Deborah, I gave that centurion a kick with my knee on a place where it unpleasantly hurts!:facepalm:
That's a possibility... then he could compassionately crucify Deborah as well.

Well, that will require a little creative licence from the Gospel writers. Matthew, Mark, John, pay attention you lot! And leave a note for that Luke blighter. ;) :D

Pay attention, Jolly, we have a new set

I take my new job very seriously, I must get cracking on my account asap

She was too terrified to get up, he had to haul her to her feet. Two legionaries took over from him as they left the jailhouse, and assorted spectators fell in behind, hoping, no doubt, for a front row view as she was nailed to her cross. They crossed in front of the paved area where Pilate was, even at that hour, already trying another prisoner.

To her surprise, Pilate called them over. Had he changed his mind?

Pilate, for his part, had seen Alice coming by, and been struck by a thought. He’d forgotten her name, but remembered that she was the girl with the sick mother who had killed a moron soldier who’d thought it clever to attack her while she had a knife in her hand. But this guy, Jesus of Nazareth, seemed to have done nothing more than upset the priests, who were now demanding his blood. He’d already had him scourged, but they still wanted him crucified. He pushed the two prisoners to the edge of a balcony, to show them to the priests assembled below. And one of the priests below him now had appeared with Alice yesterday. “Listen,” he said to them. “I’ll tell you what I am going to do. It’s Passover. I will release a prisoner for you. I do it every year. So, who do you want me to crucify? This man, Jesus, or this woman….?” He looked at the centurion quizzically.

“Alice, sir. Alice.” The centurion was devastated. He’d been looking forward to today. He knew who he wanted to crucify.

“Alice, that’s right, she who you were, ahem, ‘defending’ yesterday. I will remind you that she has a sick mother, and you mentioned that she acted in self defence. I will happily release either of these prisoners for you. Choose.”

Alice looked at the other prisoner. He didn’t look much, but then again he, like her, was not looking at his best after spending too much time with the Romans.

She didn’t wish him ill, but, unconscious of any irony, she looked up towards heaven and prayed that they would choose him and not her.

The priests conferred in whispers, clearly nonplussed by this turn of events.

Alice shook with tension. The Nazarene looked impassive. The crowd outside the gate were having the time of their lives, half were shouting for Jesus, half for Alice. Alice heard her father’s voice pleading for her to be freed. Pilate tapped a scroll impatiently on his hand. “Gentlemen, we haven’t got all day!”

To Alice’s disgust, the Priest who’d been with her yesterday said, “Must we choose? There are enough crosses on Golgotha! Crucify them both!”

“I will not. I have made my decision. Choose, damn you!”

By now, somehow, the crowd had cottoned on to Joseph’s plight, and they were nearly all on Alice’s side. “A-LICE! A-LICE!” they chanted.

Alice shut her eyes. She couldn’t bear this uncertainty. She’d spent the night grappling with the enormity of being condemned to crucifixion. Now there was doubt, and with doubt, hope. Would she live, or would she die?

Suddenly the priest spoke. “We have made our decision. Crucify Alice.”

Alice felt physically sick. Her father’s cry of despair went through her like a knife. The centurion smirked like a spoiled kid.

“If I were you, I would get back to Galilee and never come near Jerusalem again. Get him out of my sight!”

Pilate turned to Alice, as they hustled the Nazarene away. “You killed a Roman, he didn’t. The priests have chosen wisely. Take her and crucify her!”
This was the moment the whole story was written for! Now lets see those nails in her naked body!

Alice remained silent, her mind even now refusing to accept the reality of what was happening. As her aunt’s voice faded behind her they passed through the city gate. Somehow, she raised her head.

DoB 023.jpg

Ahead, for the first time in three years, she saw the knoll beside the road known as Golgotha. Three years ago she had followed Nathan as they took him to be crucified. Ahead, once again, they were making preparations for crucifixion. But now, if only her overwhelmed mind could grasp the fact, this time it was her own crucifixion they were preparing for.

DoB 024.jpg

Somehow Alice got up that hill. It seemed that the cross grew heavier with every step, but the centurion was tolerating no delay and shoved her forward, or struck her with his baton every time she faltered. As she drew near to the top her heart was pounding, but not just because of the exertion. Her stomach was in knots of fear.

DoB 025.jpg

She reached the plateau at the top, sank to her knees and here they finally relieved her of her burden.

DoB 026.jpg

Her relief was short lived as the centurion pulled her to her feet. She watched them assembling the crosses, and saw the huge spikes they were getting ready to use. And then they took the two men, and stripped them naked right in front of her. She turned away as the men, howling piteously, were dragged down onto their crosses.

Has that nasty centurion a train to catch? Come on, man! Give her a break! I bet he is already eagerly looking forward to some drink in the officer's mess, and he wouldn't want to miss a minute of it!?

In denial … yes the mind can do that. But reality is going to break through the fog any moment now.

Wragg has told an excellent story. The lead-up to Alice's crucifixion is as terrifying as her execution will be...

“What’s the matter? Haven’t you seen a naked man before?”

“You crucified my fiancée three years ago. But please don’t crucify me… it’s not fair! You know it’s not fair! Please! I’ll do anything!”

And then, as he pulled at the cord that fastened her tunic, “Oh, no, please don’t take my clothes!”

DoB 028.jpg

The centurion didn’t answer. He grabbed the tunic, and with one swift movement pulled it down her body, leaving her topless. The crowd behind roared their approval.

DoB 029.jpg

Then he reached for her loincloth.

Alice pleaded with him. “Can’t you at least leave that on?”

DoB 030.jpg

“No,” he said, “I can’t.”

Another swift movement, and Alice stood totally naked before her cross, and before the howling mob.

DoB 031.jpg

“Nail the bitch!”

“Let’s hear her scream!”

“Nice ass, can we see her tits?”

DoB 032.jpg

“Just listen to them!” grumbled Alice, trying to sound brave. “For God’s sake! I sat down to peel and chop vegetables, so why am I now standing naked in front of a crowd of jerks? And why, for that matter, are you so keen to nail me to that cross?”

Well, thanks... Jasmine helped! ;)

Not to mention the photomanipulators here - I haven't wanted for help and advice! :)
Another great chapter! The story and the art are fantastic. One can only wonder races through Alice's mind during her humiliating ordeal. What she says is only the tip of her thoughts!
