Governor
Klaus Barbie "Butcher of Lyon".
Interrogation of a partisan.
In November 1942, he took over as head of Department IV of the Gestapo. When he took up his duties he said, "I have come to murder."
On the spot, Barbie proceeded with great cruelty. In Suite 68 on the second floor of Lyon's Hotel Terminus, which he had rented, he held "orgies of unspeakably hideous vulgarity."
Barbie tortured with blowtorches, red-hot pokers, electric shocks, boiling water, and a whole collection of whips, tools, and clubs that lay on the desk before him during interrogations.
Women were always tortured naked, sometimes pulled up to the ceiling by their arms and beaten beyond recognition with fists, clubs and whips. All raped before or after. The torture often extended over many days. Not all of his victims survived the torture.
One of his most loyal helpers in the torture was Francis André, also called "Gueule Tordue" (crooked mouth). When Barbie and his helpers tortured through the nights, they sometimes poured Coqnac into their beer to keep their spirits up. When he didn't feel like it anymore, he let his people continue torturing and watching them. He was a sadist through and through.
Note on image.
Tied to an iron stake, a possible resistance fighter is whipped. Barbie couldn't care less if the woman is a resistance fighter or not. He delights in the woman's shrill cries of pain. In the background, Francis refreshes himself with a cold beer. He will continue to beat the woman after Barbie. Or give her burns all over her body with a blowtorch. The woman will probably not survive the night.
