Why not both? I remember being "woke" to that fact in my 30's when I first read the erotic poetry of e e cummings. I had read erotic prose that was art (D H Lawrence, Henry Miller, et al.), but somehow erotic and very artful poetry made me realize that sexuality was art, in a way, and that erotica was its voice.
