Frida Kahlo needs no introduction, and was not averse to getting naked for the camera. The caption for this one

was "Doña Frida de Rivera, our dear teacher tells us: Come on guys, I'll show you life."

Hers was short but intense life.

Frida Kahlo (her full name was Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón) had just turned 18 years when, on 17 Sep 1925, she was on a bus crashed by an electric streetcar. Frida was impaled with an iron handrail that went through her pelvis. Her pelvic bone was fractured, her abdomen and uterus were punctured by the impaling rail, her spine was broken in three places and her right leg in eleven places, her right foot was crushed and dislocated, her collarbone was broken, and her shoulder dislocated.

She suffered the consequences of the accident for the rest of her short life.

Kahlo’s boyfriend at the time of the bus accident, Alejandro Gómez Arias, was with her when the accident occurred. In true Kahlo style, even this tragedy seemed surreal. Arias said: “Someone in the bus, probably a housepainter, had been carrying a packet of powdered gold. This package broke, and the gold fell all over the bleeding body of Frida.”

Salma Hayek portrayed Kahlo in the 2002 film “Frida.”
