Bondage / Captivity / Interrogation / Torture Scenes in Mainstream Movies

One of the more unusual ways of gagging your captive is shown in the Dutch crime series "Flikken Maastricht", Season 9, Ep. 2. Scene starts at 9:05 (don't know how to cue it up on Dailymotion):

The damsel is a trainee policewoman who is held hostage by the baddie who had previously seduced her. She is tied up with hands in front, and when he wants to silence her, he cuts her vocal cords by ad-hoc tracheostomy. This was earlier established as his M.O. during the autopsy of a previous victim. Some obvious advantages of this for a hardboiled but low-budget TV series: it's conceptually brutal but it's all in the mind of the viewer as very little gore is shown on screen -- just a small red incision in her neck and she doesn't make another sound in the entire episode. Any medical experts here to say if this is possible? (Spoiler: the question of whether it can be reversed is academic for her as she doesn't survive the episode).
The scene seems highly unrealistic to me.

As you can see from the diagram, the vocal cords are actually quite high in the in the larynx, and behind the tracheal cartilage. They're oriented in a more horizontal than vertical direction, which makes sense since air coming up through the trachea makes them vibrate for vocalizing, such as begging and pleading. So the incision looks a little too low to me, but then I'm not otolaryngologist. In any case that's a minor detail. Even if the incision was positioned correctly, the baddie would still have to insert the knife through the skin and penetrate her tracheal cartilage knowing exactly how deep to go, and have precise control over the blade. And on a fully conscious and struggling patient no less! Otherwise he could go through the trachea into the esophagus and perhaps even into the vertebrae of the neck. It's more likely than not that he would cause severe trauma and bleeding, especially given the fact that he's doing this surgery with a fighting knife, not a scalpel. But even if he had the precision necessary to do a blind devocalization, there would be blood bubbling out of her neck, and she would probably be coughing and gagging violently as she aspirated blood.

I think the main and immediate threat in this scenario is the likelihood of aspiration of blood into her lungs. I don't speak Dutch, but I think maybe the bad guy is telling the victim to cough the blood up(?) but some of the force of the cough would be lost through the incision. I think she would have difficulty expelling the blood. Her reaction to both the pain of the incision and the inevitable aspiration of blood would have her in immediate and severe distress.

So don't try this at home!

Devocalizations are occasionally performed on dogs and cats, although not so much anymore when the only indication is the convenience of the pet owner; i.e. to keep the dog from barking or the cat from yowling. And of course humans undergo laryngeal and vocal cord surgeries for all kinds of different reasons. When appropriate, these can be performed using either a less invasive laryngoscopic approach (through the mouth) or direct incision through the larynx.

So I guess the bottom line is yes, it would be possible to do a DIY devocalization. Just like it would be possible for the President to retire gracefully.

I actually had an idea a long time ago for a story in which the bad guys (or good guys, depending on how you look at it) disguise themselves as EMTs, do a home invasion in order to kidnap the gorgeous, sexy young woman living there, intubate her, and carry her off on a stretcher. She would be absolutely unable to cry out or vocalize in any way, so this would be the world's most effective gag, with the added advantage over devocalization in not being necessarily permanent. Plus they would be able to control her breathing completely. They could extubate her at their convenience and then she would be able to scream and plead to her hearts content, so win-win.

Thanks, Jon -- that confirms my feeling when watching this that I'm sure anatomy doesn't work like that...

I have to give the actors credit, though, for playing this scene with complete conviction when it so easily could have drifted off into slapstick. I wonder what they thought when they first saw the script that they were meant to act out. I don't speak Dutch, but the language is close enough to German that I get most of the meaning with the assistance of the very helpful sub-titles. The timing I gave is at the start of the actual surgery (or butchery) scene. If you go back a minute or so, immediately before that the captor is offering her a slice of the Italian gourmet cheese he's eating off that very knife, with a fulsome account of its special taste and what she's missing out on (funnily enough, she has lost her appetite).

Then, we get this snippet of dialogue (lightly paraphrased):

Damsel: Let me go, please, I won't tell anybody, I swear!
Captor: I know you won't tell anybody. In fact, I'm absolutely certain of that!
[grabs dirty cheese knife and starts cutting]
Damsel: No! No! Arghh! Gurgle! Gurgle...
Captor: You may get a bit of blood in your throat initially, but don't worry that'll soon get better.

For the rest of the episode she shows no obvious ill effects of the operation, except for not being able to make a sound, until she gets stabbed (off-screen) right at the end as the baddie makes his getaway.

I really don't know how extensive the bleeding would be, but given the relatively wide and thick blade of the knife, and the struggling victim, I think it would be significant, both externally and internally. Often filmmakers will give a slight nod to the need to control the bleeding by having the "surgeon" heat the blade red hot to cauterize the wound, but they didn't even do that in the scene. But I have seen less convincing and less plausible medical procedures done on film.

I didn't mention the cheese on the blade because lack of aseptic technique would be the least of her worries, lol.

There are two themed films that cannot be found on the internet. Their descriptions are very sparse.

I couldn't find anything more than you have on either of these two movies. I checked for films under the English translation provided by Google for Szarvassa Valt Fiuk which apparently in English means "Deer Boys." Unfortunately there is one film "Deer Boy," which has absolutely nothing to do with the Hungarian film, but is the only film that came up. And of course whether or not that's even an accurate translation I have no idea. So I stumbled around in the interweb looking for Hungarian films from 1974 and came upon this--which though, slightly off topic, is certainly interesting, what with the line of whip cracking gents and the naked ladies, and the knife wielding priestess (?), and worth a look. Any Hungarians out there who can say exactly what in blue hell is going on here?

For what it's worth, the German Wikipedia entry for the actress Mari Törőcsik lists Szarvassa Valt Fiuk under the German title "Die Söhne des Feuers", so maybe there was a German-language release under that title. On a quick search, I can't find any download or stream under that title either, but may be another lead.

Edit: This Czech site claims to have the movie available for streaming. However, I can't make it work -- maybe it works for somebody else:

Oh it is strangely seen in your answer, but still not in the original link ???

The film "Szarvassa Valt Fiuk" tells about the uprising in a concentration camp during the war. Its name "Deer Boys" has some origins in Hungarian folklore .. And for the Hungarian ear this name is very meaningful.
You gave a link to a famous film directed by MIKLÓS JANCSÓ, but he did not make a film "Szarvassa Valt Fiuk".

Here's the less-than-one-second section of the trailer that shows crucifixions. Good news: it looks to me like a woman on the cross in the center. Bad news: it's so fuzzy and dark, it's hard to tell for sure if it is a woman, or if she's nekked. If you have a video player that shows frame-by-frame, download this clip and use the player to see what you think. You might try turning the brightness way up, also.

All-in-all, kinda disappointing.

You are correct that there is a woman, in fact there is two. The scene is a father, mother, son, and daughter.
But you don't see the nailing or raising, you don't see any writhing (they are dead), and they are fully clothed.

Its a step in the right direction, but not nearly good enough

This is a video of the naked torture/execution by pressing scene from the BBC adaptation of "Gunpowder", in 720p HD resolution. Previously discussed in a separate thread at the link below, but probably for posterity easier to find in this collective thread:
