Cam's Camera: Slave Girls

Beata Captiva

BeataBlue of DeviantArt has been kind enough to offer portraits of herself for me to use in my manipulations. I have used this one to make her a captive chained in a dungeon.

How she got herself in this predicament has yet to be clarified ...

beata_captiva.jpg
BeataBlue is an attractive model, even in captivity. Thanks to this atmospheric image she has become a recent discovery on my part. This latest Kamerijk/CamCrux manipulation includes some characteristic features in terms of fine details. The unusual copper shackles are separately applied, one of them being located to enclose the model's finger, as she tries to relieve the stress of the metal in a convincing way. Both the connecting chain and figure cast realistic shadows, since there is some overhead lighting in addition to the backlighting from the narrow window.

The extra chains attached to the wall cast their own shadows, and the window bars and water bowl are further, separate items. I am not sure what species of bird (possibly a sparrow?) has joined BeataBlue in her cell, but perhaps her companion is symbolic of the freedom which she is currently being denied? Nice work, Kam! :)

Desert Predators

A scene inspired by Italian artist Giulio Rosati's painting entitled Desert nomads. Rosati (1857–1917) was an 'orientalist' artist and did not disdain picturing harem scenes , such as Selecting the favourite, Choosing the favourite, A new arrival, The harem dance, Inspecting new arrivals, The slave market ... So hopefully he might not have disapproved of my tampering with his desert nomads scene...

He didn't say anything when I tampered with the same painting. :D

Great image, Kam. The painting itself almost has a hole that needs to be filled, considering Rosati's other paintings, and the addition of a dusky submissive slave girl fits the scene perfectly. Either that or she's someone's daughter and doesn't want to be sold to the old guy on the horse, and is begging the other guy not to go through with the deal. Either way, she fits right into the story.

Thanks Jollyrei and great to know that you tampered with this too :) Where can we see that piece of work ?

I doubt that the girl "doesn't want to be sold to the old guy and is begging the other guy" because it would be hard to explain why she is naked with her wrists tied. Well they may have had strange customs in the desert back then, but still ... I prefer to think she is a slavegirl being sold by the horseman to the other guy, and she's been ordered to kneel and bow in submission to her future master.

Not quite sure what the naked girl is doing there
But does one need a reason for these things? Sometimes we must just accept things as they come. ;) I suppose she might be a slave of one of the other fellows and is holding his horse.

I love the way the old horseman seems to be awestruck by her figure
I think this is a completely normal reaction, considering the somewhat obscure circumstances of her appearance. :D

You're right, she might be a slavegirl and the old guy's reaction is completely normal considering her figure and absence of clothing :)
And your picture is excellent anyway.

Several of our manip artists have become associated with the Orientalist movement, and certain well known paintings appear as backgrounds with some regularity. Nevertheless, it is something of a coincidence for Jolly and Kam to have selected the same painting by Rosati for manips published in such close chronological proximity. In the past, both artists have employed the same models, and so their work inevitably invites comparison.

On this occasion, different models have been used and the treatment of the backgrounds is entirely different. Jolly has manipulated the background image to rearrange the painted figures prior to the insertion of new characters. Kam has preserved Rosati's composition, subtly repairing some damaged areas, and inserting a slave girl in the centre of the picture.

In both cases, the source remains recognisable, but the narrative quality has been changed in a novel reinterpretation of the scene. 'The Desert Nomads' is a watercolour painting, demonstrating Rosati's considerable talents as a draughtsman and colourist. Blending photographic elements into this kind of painting to obtain convincing results is particularly challenging, especially when the artwork displays such delicate handling. Well done, Kam and Jolly! :)

Troy has fallen.
Helen the Beautiful returns as Menelaus's lawful wife

and he gets some perks along wit her.

This is the latest collaboration between Sclava, who wrote the story, and myself the illustrator. Unless she illustrated the image :)
Hope you enjoy it !

Troy.jpg

In the distance I see the waves crashing one by one into the land of the Trojan Gulf. Hundreds of Achaean ships lie like Poseidon's sea monsters, raising their long spines above the water. They stand ready to plunge into their bowels the booty from my ruined home - the great Troy. Right in front of me stands my dear sister, who got more than I did. It frightens me to remember what the Achaeans did to her. She is broken and completely subdued. All because of damned Helen the Beautiful. It is because of her and foolish Paris that we girls of Troy are now standing completely naked, waiting for the Achaeans to divide us and load us as slaves on their ships, taking us away to unknown lands.

Great gods! Seeing this destruction, seeing my sister's downfall, our humiliation, I hate that Helen more and more! And why does everyone call her the daughter of Aphrodite? That foreign woman is no better than me, my sister, or the other Trojans. The same figure, the same ass, the same breasts... She drove Paris mad and dared him to steal her from her lawful husband. And what did he achieve by his terrible act? The gods are angry, and now our men go to Hades and we women are the prey of the Achaeans. If Paris had chosen me, things would have been different.

The Achaeans are drinking wine, sharing their loot, and cackling with jubilant joy as they see the ruins of Troy and our humiliation. The warlike joy of the victors and the girls' and women's fate of the vanquished. Such a shame! I hope Apollo strikes them all with his destructive arrows, as he did more than once, in all the years of the siege of Troy. How foolish we were to laugh at the Achaeans, who thought our city was impregnable. The gods laughed at our pride, suggesting to our enemies that they should be deceitful and sneaky.

And now I am forced to show all my charms to tell of my skills around the house, so that the warriors will divide us equally according to the lot. I am condemned to become a slave of the Achaean, to weave his clothes, to grind his flour, to share his bed, to keep the destroyer of my home warm at night. Why have the gods punished me so cruelly because of this lying Helen, who pretends to be a meek lamb before punishing her husband Menelaus, but inside is a ravenous viper?

"I told you before, dear, I was kidnapped against my will."
I heard the painfully familiar voice, and clenched my fists.
"All right, so be it. But you were used by that puppy, Paris!" Menelaus sighed sadly, coming up to us with Helena. "How glad I am that Philoctetes sent him to Hades. There was talk that he turned to you for help."
"That's a lie, you know that," Helena began, and suddenly she exclaimed, glaring at us, "Oh, here are Ia and Arsinoe!"
"Do you know them?" asked Menelaus.
"Ah!" smirked Helena, "yes, two flighty aristocrats."
Menelaus got cocky, raised his chest proudly, and said, "These Trojan whores are mine by lot!
"The traitor!" I whispered, unable to stand it.
Helen came right up to me.
"The traitor? Don't make me laugh! The Trojans are not my people, and Troy is not my homeland, but..."
"Enough!" Menelaus intervened. ""These two girls are yours now. They're my gift for your return to me, my dear, and the fall of that hateful Troy."
Helena smiled, glowing, and replied, "Thank you, my husband. You are very generous, oh strong one."
"There's no need to thank me, my love. You are my wife and all that is mine is yours."
Turning to me, he added, "And you..." He looked me over from head to toe, pausing on my chest, then he added,"Well, I will not punish you for your insolence towards my wife. I love unbridled mares like you."
Menelaus glanced at my sister, then at me. "Today I will see if it is true what they say, that Trojan bitches are very hot in bed. You don't mind, do you, wife?"
"Of course not. She's just a slave."
"Good! Escort the slave girls to our tent. I'll be there shortly."
Menelaus left, and we followed Helen.
"Happy girls. Troy's fall was a foregone conclusion. I knew it from the start."
"You went against the will of the gods!" I whispered, treading small steps on the hot sand.
"Pfft... I did the will of the gods, for I contributed to what they had ordained."
"There was no danger for you. You were queen before, you are queen now. But I have become a slave..."
"Then behave like a slave!"Helena grinned. "Do as your sister did, she..."
"Like a slave? You mean sleep with your husband?" I whispered in tears.
"Fine, my husband gave me a crybaby! And a few days ago I was buzzing about the impregnability of Troy, making fun of the Achaeans. And where is your laughter now, my dear?" She stopped abruptly, grabbed my arm, and said angrily, "Go ahead and let my husband roll around with you all he wants. Of course I'm going to fake jealousy. But I don't care. You are the defeated slave, and I am the wife of the victor. I was queen with Menelaus and Paris and queen again with Menelaus. All because of my beauty. I want power, that's all. So I am glad for his gift, as a living testimony of my husband's power. That he can enslave anyone, not just my friend the former you, but the aristocrat of impregnable Troy. I will be the envy of all the Spartan women that I will bring back from Troy. Now be good and shut your mouth or I will punish you. Better think about pleasing my husband today, because if he remains dissatisfied, I will sell you when I return to Sparta."

It is always good to see Kam and @sclava returning with a new collaboration, in their familiar style. In the illustration, I believe all seven figures have been inserted individually, taking considerable care to maintain a lighting direction which is consistent with the sunlit background.

Helena is the female on the right, dressed in what appears to be Asian/oriental clothing, and Sclava's character is probably the nude female bound to the post beside her. Sclava's sister is possibly the blonde female on the opposite post, who bears more than a passing resemblance to Emilia Clarke.

Menelaus appears relaxed, in civilian garb, in contrast to the other male, an Achaean sentry of the Octopus legion. His right foot is the only one shown in contact with the ground, and so he is the only one requiring the insertion of a ground shadow. I cannot tell if the white smoke in the upper left corner has been added to indicate the destruction of Troy, or if this is part of the original background. An eighth figure is just visible between the nudes in the right half of the picture, who might account for the presence of the smoke?

In many ways, 'Troy' is an encore, with Sclava describing the recent captivity of her character in response to Kam's latest illustration, the scene being set in the defeated city. But the same location provides the setting in an earlier Kamerijk-Sclava collaboration, 'Enslaved by the Vandals', published on DeviantArt two years ago. According to Sclava's script, the earlier manip depicts recently enslaved Roman women being held captive in Carthage.

Kamerijk Troy.jpg Kamerijk enslaved_by_the_vandals_by_kamerijk_de38h9w-fullview.jpg

In each picture, four nude females are secured in a similar fashion, to the shelter framework, under the watchful eye of a guard. Each story provides a first person account of the misfortune of a defeated and recently enslaved people. Kam and Sclava are doing what they enjoy most - inspiring each other and producing fine results. Well done, both! :)

Nothing escapes your attention, Bob. The setting of 'Troy' is indeed the same as the one I used for the 'Vandals', and is known in real life as 'Abraham's well', somewhere in Israel. I can only confirm your observations :
The nude figure on the left does indeed bear a strong resemblance with Emilia Clarke : she is a composite of Emilia's head and Delizi's body, Delizi doubling up as the nude captive on the right, who is also the narrator. The idea of using Emilia Clarke's features is originally owed to @Krasekio and the scene was intended to illustrate Daenerys Targaryen's capture and enslavement, but evolved differently under @sclava's influence. Depicting the Khaleesi's mishaps remain an open avenue of course.
The figure representing Helen of Troy is that of an Indian woman. I'm not quite sure, by the way, about using pictures of 'ordinary' people (meaning not models) in this sort of manipulation...
The smoke was added to evoke the burning of the captured city, supposedly standing behind that background wall.
The partially visible figure at the back, between two of the captives, belongs to the original background picture and is one of a group of visiting tourists. I have 'rearranged' that background on the right to erase most of them (and now see that the job was left unfinished behind Helen's figure), except that one whom I thought nobody would even notice. That was counting without you :)
Thank you once again for your sympathetic review.

Seems like a waste of well water just to drown a couple women...

The queen and the slave

Cleopatra VII Philopator, Queen of Egypt, and a slavegirl imported from Nubia.

The original image with Cleopatra is by narkonew of DA. The model acting as the slavegirl is Putri. This is a very simple manipulation involving little more than sticking the figure of Putri over the original picture, with only minor adjsutments.

Sometimes the simple manips are the best approach. In this case, the new slave girl's pose demonstrates she is new and presenting herself. This also provides a focus for Cleopatra's gaze, and a new context for the original photo. Everything fits as if it was always there.
