I believe that’s how it was done 90% of the time

Take any small pine tree

Chop the top off and you have the cross beam

The trunk is the upright

The victim tied to the cross beam then lead out to their fate

Any resistance met with the whip

If that’s not enough, one guy each end of that pole and you’re dragged to your fate

There’s no escape

I agree with your vision but for my part, in my fantasies, I wear a small loincloth that was soiled by my sweat mixed with the blood that trickled during my severe flagellation.
My loincloth is torn off by the executioners at the moment of my being placed on the cross or after my crucifixion, at the moment when the cross is erected.

Yes, I believe you are correct. The horizontal beam (patibulum) was what was carried to the execution site. A number of crux videos have the poor girl carrying the entire cross. I suppose it makes for good cinema.

Perhaps they could crucify us together, mon ami. I'm not wearing a loincloth, however. They have stripped me naked as a form of humiliation before I carry the cross.

We are crucified on crosses where the patibulum is only two meters above the ground. Then they release the lions. They smell our blood from the floggings and sprint over for their feasts.
