He started as a constructor in Formula 5000 in 1969 (after taking over the failed Leda project) and was pretty successful winning five out of a dozen races.
The Surtees Racing Organisation moved to Formula One in 1970 though, with no car ready, Surtees was forced to drive an old McLaren for the first few rounds. The team had very limited success - their best year as a constructor was 5th in 1972 - and eventually shut down after the 1978 season.
