Historical background

The first mention of chastity belts in songs and poems dates back to the XII century. But these mentions are most likely poetic metaphors. The first serious mention of the chastity belts dates back to the XV century. The book "Bellifortis", completed on August 28, 1405 by Konrad Kyeser von Eichstätt [de] (German: Konrad Kyeser von Eichstätt), contains an illustration with the comment "This is a heavy iron belt with which the women of Florence are covered." The text also mentions other Italian cities — Rome, Venice, Milan, Bergamo — as places where chastity belts are produced. However, we do not know whether this information is true or fiction of the author. It is possible that outside of their home, the chastity belt saved Italian women from rape.

In Victorian England, the men's chastity belt was invented for the first time. It was used to prevent boys from masturbating. Then in England (often priests) they said that masturbation leads to blindness, insanity, sudden death, uncontrolled growth of hair on the palms, etc.

In the XX century, chastity belts made of stainless steel and other modern materials that can be worn for quite a long time appeared. Today, chastity belts for both sexes are used as a sexual fetish and in the practice of BDSM.
