“You asked to see me, Mrs Evans?” Savannah stood nervously in front of the feared housekeeper.
“You lied to me, girl!”
“I didn’t ma’am! I told you God’s truth!”
“What you didn’t realise, when you constructed that ridiculous story, aimed at making a fool of me, was that I’d given Blaire the hiding of her life earlier that evening! It is therefore quite impossible for her to have been, erm, enjoying the sins of the flesh at the time that you said she was! Why did you lie?”
“I promise, Ma’am, on my life, they were having sex!”
“I think you heard Blaire in pain, and then you imagined up the story.” She eyed her, narrowly. “Who could even imagine two women being so…intimate? Perhaps it’s you that I should be thrashing, for even suggesting such depravity in Cruxton Abbey!”
“B-but, ma’am, she said ‘Oh Yes! Roxie! Don’t stop! Don’t stop!’”
“Quiet, Girl! I don’t want to hear any more of your sinful ravings! I shall lock you in your room, and you, not they, will be flogged in the morning! That will teach you to try and stir up trouble, and to make up such vile stories!”
Mrs Evans pushed Savannah up the rear stairs, Savannah was weeping bitter tears.
They passed Blaire and Roxie’s door.
Savannah spun on her heel.
“Is that pain, then?” she hissed.
Giggling, panting, groaning.
For a moment, Mrs Evans’ eyes widened in shock. Then she burst open the door, and there they were.
In flagrante delicto.
