When Maidens Meet their Death

A maiden in her vernal years
Is full of life and joy!
So great our fears, so sharp our tears
When death comes to destroy.

And when, by accident or war
A maiden is condemned
We suffer sore emotion raw
That such young life must end.

We see a girl led out to die
The beauty and the cross
Such darkness lies beneath blue skies
A summertime of loss.

We hear the hammer as it clangs
We see her fight for breath;
And so she hangs in tortured pangs
Within the grasp of death.

We gaze upon that fearful sight –
What monsters, then, are we?
That take delight in maiden’s plight
And her mortality?

But yet, ‘tis not ‘delight’ we feel
As we, too, gasp for breath;
All humans feel emotions real
When maidens meet their death.
