On October 15th I searched BDSM on DA and got 407,500 hits. I did it just now and the number is 409,200. That's an increase of 1,700 artists tagging their art BDSM in just 10 days. This morning I was in a discussion with a writer who joined DA a few days ago and wrote a story about being a clueless super heroine who fucked up the job and regularly fell into the hands of the villains who repeatedly gang raped her. This is happening regularly, not gang rape although that is still a mayor turn on for some, I mean new people who don't know about the purge and think they can get away with it. It looks like Eclipse's accessibility through easy mobile phone use is making policing the whole site a nightmare. I know we're all indignant that our lovely, friendly old DA changed into this other thing but I'm not sure even the people that run it know what's going on. Eclipse is a loose cannon. I would add one thing, which is either very perceptive or dumb as shit (feel free to tell me which).. Restrictions on iconography come and go like a cultural tide.. and one thing you can say for those times where imagery is regarded as forbidden or dangerous: it decreases the quantity but massively increases the quality and preciousness of transgressive art. So I see it as Not Wholly A Bad Thing. After all, without rules there can be no transgression.
I still think DA is run by assholes though, who treat living, breathing artists like ball-bearings in a machine. Banning people without a word of warning or explanation is very much not OK. But it’s their site, let them fuck it up if they want. Already other sites are springing up to accommodate the exiles. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Those are my rambling incoherent thoughts at this stage. If DA bans me tomorrow I’ll be cheesed off but not surprised or devastated.
