Haha I think it's going to take a long time before anything results that's worth showing, if ever.
Played around a bit with it today.

First of all though, the install really is as easy as claimed.
If you already have Krita, update to 2.5.1 (or just run your Ninite) otherwise do a fresh install.
Download the zip, put it in the folder, go through the configure menu as described and grab a coffee.
I do not have any experience with Krita, it's just on my machine because hey it's free and why not. But I understand how a basic graphics program with brushes and layers and so on works.

Now I've got Stable Diffusion on my computer which is already a big leap for someone like me because before that I always thought "yeah maybe I should try it but am I really going to wade neck deep into some Python dependency hell, just to install something that maybe won't work anyway?"

So this is really the installer for know-nothings.

And yeah, it works on my laptop with a puny 6gb Vram which is the minimum requirement. I don't play computer games or do 3D and so don't have some tower PC with a big fat graphics card.
Of course I'm not using high resolutions, just starting off with 512x512 or 512x640.
And of course I have not been trying to use the live mode.

Now the simple test is of course just use it with a blank canvas and some prompt - just using Krita as a SD user interface for absolute dummies.
(actually if I run it without a prompt and a blank canvas it always returns a close up, indoor portrait of a young woman. Probaby the default assumption of what a user wants to see if no input is given :D)

but as I understand from the youtube tutorials i've seen the basic idea is it picks up from say, a rather simple outline drawing, and will elaborate this into the AI rendering. So my attempts have been, make a simple drawing, or load a simple pre-existing line drawing, set it up as a source (this may be an issue as the UI I see is not the same as in the tuorials) and then 'generate'

That hasn't really been working so far for me.

What does work is the pose control.

I can definitely tell the AI 'that arm needs to go that way and that leg needs to go here'.
Also I can use a previously rendered-from-prompt-only AI image as an input, it does pick up on that. So if successive generations gave me versions of a scene ranging from "Stonehenge vibe" to "Tulum vibe" I can fix it on the Tulum version if I want.
So far this seems to work for "locking down" successive AI generations but I've failed at having it make sense of any freshly drawn input. Not giving up yet though.

One observation from my first attempts - if I'm rendering (from prompt only) a full figure using the SD 1.5, it does pick up the vibe of a scene very well, but the figures are teratogenic monstrosities, I am not even talking about extra fingers here, the faces look like the worst things you will find conserved in formaldehyde in an 18th century anatomical museum.

The results I get from switching to SD XL are far superior. Also this thing seems to have a much more decisive interpretation of a prompt, successive generated images don't diverge as randomly. It's also less "cute", SD 1.5 really likes to go for the "anime girl mutagenized by gamma ray burst" look. However... in my futile attempts to work with original drawing - XL was even worse...

Even with these early steps though I can see how the process obviously gives me more control than just using a web interface and typing a prompt.

And yeah, this thing spontaneously comes up with lighting, costumes, background architecture & so forth that just 'feel right' in the sense that, it does look like a still from some film. Even if it is a B-movie, nothing wrong with that :)

So there is going to be a lot of trial and error here. Which is to be expected for a complete novice...

Seriously though, I'm glad you tried it and shared your process experience. It's surprising how you managed to run it with a 6Gb VRAM video card. I'm not sure how much it'd affect the usability, but there's always a cloud option (which the plugin natively supports) in case you decide to make serious works with the setup.

Anyway, from what I gathered from your post, it looks like the setup went correctly, but you may need a bit more time to get yourself familiar with the tool.

I thought it might be helpful if I could create a render using the workflow you tried. So, here's a brief explanation of how I used the workflow you mentioned below:

The line drawing doesn't have to be very detailed, so I just scribbled this on a blank paint layer:

There are a few ways to refine this control map image using an iterative method, but I'll just use this rudimentary drawing as it is this time. The important thing is to add a control layer and choose the right kind of model for the image. As shown above, I added a "Line Art" entry and made it point to the paint layer containing my drawing.

Then I added the prompt text and hit generate to get this image:

You can keep generating until you stumble upon an image that gives you the right vibe. The overall atmosphere is more important than the details in this stage since you can't expect to get all the details right in a single pass (especially if you have to use 512x512 resolution).

As expected, you can see the image contains several problematic areas. The AI apparently didn't recognise the rifle in my crude drawing, so I selected the area and refined the prompt:

You may have noted that I also included the girl's face area instead of just selecting the rifle part. The reason is that it usually works better when the AI has sufficient context to understand what is happening in the image. A great thing about the AI plugin is that it supports the usual layer-based workflow of Krita itself, meaning I can always delete unnecessary parts in a generated layer or merge several of them.

After generating an image, you can choose "Apply" to save it as a layer, and you can erase everything except for the good parts of it. Also, note that I changed my prompt to describe only what is depicted in the selected area so that the AI wouldn't get distracted by other irrelevant terms.

The "strength" I highlighted in the above image is "denoising strength" in other AI frontends, meaning how much of the underlying image you want to change. Beware that setting it 100% has a special meaning with the plugin, so try to lower it if you don't get what you want.

Now all I need to do is repeat the process to refine all the areas I want to change. Using a control net to keep the composition while changing a region is common. I could use the Line Art layer again, but it's based on a crude drawing which must have a lot of errors in proportions and may not even match the current image exactly.

In this case, I can generate a new control map image using the current image. And, I chose the depth map model because it's good for preserving the composition without keeping the details which I want to change rather than preserve them. You can use the highlighted button shown below to generate a depth map layer:

Also, I wanted to add body hair to suit my personal preferences, which can be difficult to achieve without using Loras. So I temporarily changed the settings to add relevant Loras in the preference dialogue as shown below:

When all was done, I switched to the upscale mode to increase the resolution to 2048x2048, which resulted in this final output:


(I already reached the maximum number of images limitation, so I just linked the image from the other thread.)

Definitely gives me some ideas what to do differently.
First of all just knowing it will actually render into a selection just like that, OK need to try.

Also I did get the basic idea of using control layers right but probably applied it incorrectly. For instance I have some existing sketches of various things & figures, I'd load them into Krita, but they are basically line work on white or gray solid background.
I didn't get any decent result with either "Image" or "Line Art" with that.

Here it looks like you're using a layer that has the line work on an otherwise transparent layer, maybe that's important?

It's surprising how you managed to run it with a 6Gb VRAM video card.
Getting a 512x640 with SD 1.5 is like "several seconds" and with XL about 30-45 sec. so obviously there's an order of magnitude or more lacking to run the 'live mode' but I'm just playing around a bit. I do sometimes get out of memory errors whem I'm using a long prompt, several negative prompts, plus a pose control and an image control but I have a hunch I am just wasting performance here. Your prompt is way shorter for instance (and subjectively, long prompts do seem to cause more errors)

For now I just want to get a bit of basic understanding, even if I never "produce" anything it just means I can form an opinion on some of this AI stuff that is a little beyond just regurgitating whichever opinion most recently seemed convincing.

Usually, the line art image should be drawn in white lines on a black background. But Krita seems to do the conversion behind the scenes, so I'm not entirely sure what the right format is. I think you're right in assuming that it must have a transparent background in Krita because that's what I see when I add a blank paint layer.

Google just launched what they claim to be the most capable multimodal AI model called Gemini:


It certainly looks impressive. And I've already made peace with the inevitable fact that what I've been doing for the past 25 or so years as a programmer would be either obsolete or replaced by AI, so I don't care too much about the pace at which AI evolves either.

But I'm concerned about the prospect that tech giants like Google or Microsoft will likely lead AI development soon.

Probably, it's not a discussion suitable for this site. But as a long-time supporter of the Free and Open Source(FOSS) movement, I can't help but feel that AI might nullify what it has achieved in the past decades.

You may not know it, but software is one of the rare fields where the collective will of individuals who want to freely share their ideas and help each other has won over the greed of big corporations.

To simplify things, there had been a war between those "hippies" who wanted to make programs for fun and share their work freely with others and those corporations who make software for money and keep it their secret. Surprisingly, the hippies have won big time (it's a long story), and nowadays, most big IT corporations endorse or participate in the FOSS movement, including Google and Microsoft.

But if big corporations start to gain a significant edge in AI development, they'll surely try to turn the tide and go back to the days when software was a big company secret only their paid customers could access.

I hope the FOSS community can win over big corporations again in this new field of AI development, as they did 20 years ago in the enterprise IT market.

Okay played around a bit more. Lessons learned

one really needs to use higher resolution. Even with weak hardware. Yes it will be slower but it doesn't seem to be the limit. Something like 960x1280 is possible. Results are way better.

LCM/live mode works though of course not in real time. In this case it's SD 1.5 that gives good results.

Using the depth layer is very effective.

The problem with line art seems to have been mostly, that when downsized the lines (pencils) were too fine/light and it didn't really pick it up. There's a function to create line art from an existing image and if I use that as an intermediate step it works.

Also in general when starting out it's an advantage if the input isn't too detailed. That just gums things up.

By and large I'd say that the Krita/SD/LCM integration is for me, now pretty much working as advertised in the various yotube videos etc. only of course slower. It is definitely an interesting tool.

Seriously though, Mixtral 8x variants have received a lot of attention lately. Open-source models released so far have been on par with GPT 3.5, with GPT 4 remaining in a league of its own. The developers of Mixtral 8x claim that it can compete with GPT4 thanks to adopting a new architecture.

I can't verify that claim, but it looks like people who tested it at least agree that it's miles better than other open-source models we have now.

By the way, Open Router - one of the sites which provides such LLMs as an online service - is currently offering the Mixtral 8x Instruct model for free.

So, I did quick RP sessions with it and was quite impressed with the result. I would have explained how you can try it yourself were it not for the formatting bug SillyTavern - a popular client for AI roleplaying - has at the moment. But even with the issue, the AI proved to be an excellent RP partner for me, dealing with all the niche kinks I instructed it to indulge admirably well.

As with image generation using Stable Diffusion, there are several different ways to do RP with AI using LLMs, for free or at an affordable cost.

Strangely to me, it looks like there's only minimal interest in AI RP so far, although we have a growing number of people trying out Stable Diffusion now. If we happen to more people showing interest in the subject, I may try to write a simple guide to set up Silly Tavern for kinky RP.

To share actual news while I'm posting this, the CEO of Mistral said they will release an open-source GPT4-level model next year. I already mentioned how software is one of the few fields where individuals' collective will to share their work and collaborate freely has won over corporate greed and how AI technology might threaten it. So, it's welcoming news how some of the companies try to uphold the ideal.
 
I noticed OpenRouter also provides the Goliath 120b model, so I did a short test to see how much better it is compared with the 7b/13b/20b models I've been running locally.

I instructed the AI to do a short RP between two characters using one of the scenarios/lores I made in SillyTavern. Note that the setup is for roleplaying between a human (me) and an AI character. As such, the AI often got confused when I instructed it to play two characters by itself, and I needed to hit "regenerate" a few times.

This is what Goliath 120b generated:

And this is from a 7b model, OpenHermes 2.5 Mistral 7b. You can clearly see how the lines became much shorter and more generic. It's still impressive, considering the model is small enough that most people with a decent graphics card can run on their PC.

There are also 13b, 20b, 34b, and 70b models whose performance would probably fall between the two I mentioned above. For the record, 20b is the largest model I was able to run locally on my RTX3080 10Gb VRAM hardware, and running Goliath 120b on OpenRouter cost me slightly under 1$ per hour.

I've been working as a programmer for quite a long time. And, I've also been dabbling with the idea of making a kinky sandbox game as a hobby for the past several years.

Recently, the project had been on hold since I struggled to find enough leisure and motivation. And today, I tested a new AI plugin for my development tool (i.e. IDE) I purchased for the company work. To my surprise, it wrote the documentation, test suites, and even more tedious parts of the code itself without minimal intervention, which saved enough time for me to decide I could resume my project again.

It was a surprise - almost a shock - to me since the code I wrote was rather esoteric, and there are few examples on the internet resembling it. Aside from the goal of making a kink game platform, I intended to use it as a testbed for new programming ideas I've developed over the years.

It means the AI won't have much problem writing codes for a typical work project, which would be much more common and easier to understand. I don't think any of the junior developers I currently work with can fully understand the code AI generated for me, not to mention writing it themselves.

It looks like the time AI will compete with me for my job might come sooner than I expected. But like what I mentioned of generative AIs that many traditional artists feel threatened by, I think it's pointless to go against the trend regarding AI.

I'll just try to use it to my advantage and feel glad it saved enough time to allow me to resume my work on the hobby project, well, at least until it actually drives me out of my job.

Why not. I haven't tried that many adult games, nor did I look for them. I tried the one called Slaves of Rome which is ok. In it you can buy and sell slaves, torture them in your dungeon etc. And you set out to perform some missions.
Lately I've been busy but I only made photo manipulations. Which I like. I need to find time to do some more.

Do you feel that AI has potential? The ones I see on Deviantart feel boring if you ask me. The ones created with 3D modelling are way better. And you can create some cool ones with photo manipulation as well.. Not to say that some AI creations are cool and that they like.

As to your question, I feel that it's well past the stage where we need to ask whether AI has potential. Large Language Models(LLM) can do amazing things already, and the field is also moving at an astonishing speed.

I already wrote how the AI plugin I tried had written better code and documentation than the professional programmers I work with at my job. And it's not just programming but in many other areas like the MBA exam, U.S. medical licensing exam, Google coding interview, AI already outperforms most humans.

It even plays extremely kinky RP with me regularly, so I think a more appropriate question could be whether or not we humans can stay competitive for long when AI has already started taking over what we used to do at unprecedented speed.

As for creating digital artwork, I'll just argue that AI can be your best friend, not an enemy. And I'm saying this as a person who has spent non-trivial time in all three methods you mentioned: 3D modelling, photo manipulation, and AI.

Of course, art is subjective, and great artists still draw by hand when everyone has a smartphone with a mega-pixel lens. But if the criteria are photorealism or achieving a wide range of expression with ease, there's little to argue that AI is a superior tool to Daz3D or image editors used for photo manipulation.

By the way, Deviantart isn't a good place to go if you want to see what AI gurus are creating with Stable Diffusion or DALLl-E. I'd suggest browsing the user gallery on Civitai or r/StableDiffusion instead if you feel curious (and maybe ask yourself how many of them you'd be able to recreate using 3D modelling or photo manipulation).

But I can't deny how they are still quite ahead of Stable Diffusion even though it's been evolving rapidly. Today, I saw these photorealistic examples generated with Midhourney and had to wonder how much I will have to wait until I can expect such a quality from Stable Diffusion:

At the rate that AI technology evolve it will probably take about 2 or 3 month until Stable Diffusion reach that level, but if you look closely at these images the mistakes are still present.
 
Yes, most of the hands and feet look weird.
I think that's the most glaring difference between you and me regarding the subject of AI; When I see such images, I get excited about the possibility of generating images of naked slave girls of such quality, whereas you get yourself busy searching for anything that can prove AI "isn't there". :p

"Uncanny Valley" is the effect whereby something that is 99% realistic can look weirder to the human eye than an image that is only 80% realistic. This happens because the near-realism of the 99% image makes its few faults more glaring... the brain unconsciously applies a higher standard to that image. Of course all brains vary in exactly where that effect kicks in.

Since, as you've said, it takes a lot of skill to get through the valley and out the other side to 99.9% where the effect goes away again, I think people who are not yet that skilled in AI (so that's not you, obviously) might be better off aiming for less realism and more artistic value.
