A thoroughly used Dorothy lay on the bed when I came by to tell her she would be brought to the gallows in a half hour. Dreamily she looked at me and said “After that shagging I need my neck and back stretched.”

That would certainly happen soon. I was a little uncomfortable as Bull was on vacation and Messa was borrowing Gunner on another thread.

I was back on the gallows when it was time to fetch Dorothy. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that stoic bravery that the condemned women show goes out the window when the shit is about to hit the fan. The assholes loaned to me from the IMF swore they knew what they were doing.

Dorothy was forced to the gallows where Tree’s sister Jane waited. Jane was not too pleased with the fight Dorothy was putting up nor the expertise of the IMF goons dragging Dorothy towards her. She barked at Dorothy “I thought you wanted to be hanged. What the hell is your problem?”

Dorothy said “Not like this- not in a private courtyard! If I am to die I wanted people to see my suffering!”

“You stupid bitch, these gallows are for people who have legitimate charges against them. Get your ass up those stairs so the party can get started!”

Dorothy shrugged and said “OK…”

I met Dorothy at the door that led out to the gallows platform. The rowdy crowd outside could be clearly heard inside even with the door shut. I shooed off the IMF armatures and told Dorothy to turn around and put her hands behind her back. I used a smooth nylon rope to bind her wrists. To the untrained eye she would appear calm for situation but with each jerk of the rope her fingers twitched and as close as I was I could see her trembling. Her wrists secured I offered what reassurances I could. I told her that the pay area sold out and even the free viewing area filled up by mid-afternoon.

I had gone over what was going to happen the day before but when I brought Dorothy onto the gallows and the crowd erupted she tried to push back against me. I pushed her towards the noose and she whispered “I thought I was just going to be hanged.”

“You are, Dorothy”

“There’s a couple thousand people out there!”

“I would guess closer to five thousand” I replied as I slipped the noose over her head and tightened it enough there was no escape. I double checked the ropes…
