And this is iof course why consensus among military historians is that the North African campaign was doomed from the beginning. Going on the offensive with a pork-and-beer driven force in a region where the reserves cannot be locally replenished, meanwhile leaving the overstretched supply logistics open to attack by the opponent... :facepalm:

From Poland to Barbarossa, excellent logistics had been the key to the success of fast and mobile tank warfare. Probably, they were confident it would work in North Africa too. It was not a pre-planned campaign as Afrika Korps had originally been intended as merely an expeditionary force to support the Italians. It was named a division, but was hardly as large as a brigade. It is only in the course of the events Afrika Korps took initiative itself and grew to a strength of over 100 000.

Yes, the brits also with the help of the US had better equipment, many more, not better quality, as easely seen in the pics

The brits had underwear, while the germans did not even have enough razors to shave....

I also am not so sure, if not Montgomery was the far better general. He was treated quite unfairly after the war, as for example in the movie "a bridge to far".
