Joan of Arc is for sure famous. Here the version of John Gilbert:

Joan of Arce is one of those very interesting historical cases. She is of course usually depicted with a sword but concrete evidence that she ever actually used one is at best VERY thin. It makes a lot of sense that Joan never wielded a sword as it takes years of training (I know) to even get decent with one never mind combat ready. Years which she never would have had between her appearance on the scene and her demise.

In all likelihood she was given and carried a sword as part of the guard (who would have had orders to make sure she wasn't killed or captured) around the battle standard and would have ridden next to the standard bearer to indicate her importance to all around. I suspect that if she ever actually drew the sword it was while making rousing speeches to the troops and not to swing at anybody.

It is also possible she carried something much simpler to use (such as an ax, club or mace) for self-defense but that wouldn't be as glamorous would it? (Despite the fact that they were used on the field of battle, especially in the plate era, much more often than a sword was.

I agree, Jeanne probably only carried a sword as symbol of rank and to signal the attack.

Those guards didn't do their jobs very well when she was captured in a minor skirmish with the Burgundians.

I don't think she would be able to use a sword that size, too long, too heavy.
