Funny story. Nearly 20 years ago, my wife and I attended a class on cutting (in the BDSM sense). The woman who was teaching was quite knowledgeable, and was just getting into the art and psychology of it. She had several blades, each of which I knew was sharper than a razor (much like my own leatherworking knives). She would talk as she was unpacking the blades, always looking at what she was doing.
Then, she pulled out a particular dagger, looked out at the crowd, gripped the blade with her palm and casually slid it quickly out of her hand. She never stopped talking, and most people didn't even notice. But myself (and two other people in the class) jumped and nearly vomited, when she did it. She took notice and smiled, and kept talking like nothing had happened. There was no blood. It was her one and only blunt, and she did it specifically to see who was familiar with blades.
That incident taught me a great deal about the psychology of the game, and of fear, especially that based on personal experience. Now, I'm that way with weapons and armour. Fantasy and movies are okay, but my mind always goes to actual injuries that I have seen or received, or weapons that I have used.
Also, I have also used that trick of substituting a blunt for a sharp during a scene, to great effect. It's amazing the kinds of reactions you get from someone when they think that they might ACTUALLY be in danger (even when they are not).
Oh, if you want to see some really cool, fun woman with a real sword kind of stuff, check out Bladesdancer on FB or Instagram. She is tiny but does full routines with a goddamned montante. I couldn't wield that monstrosity. Her sword is literally taller than she is.
