When the militia occupied her town in order to offer “protection” during the civil war, young Rima decided to display her opposition to violence by wearing her Peace shirt as the militia drove through the town.

The militia commander liked to establish his authority in each new town in which his men set up a base of operations. When he saw young Rima standing outside a cafe with the peace symbol prominently displayed across her chest, he saw his opportunity.

He barked one short command into his radio, and four men rushed the crowd, grabbed the naive girl, and pulled her into a truck before speeding away. Just minutes later, the shocked Rima was standing on the bed of the truck (now parked alongside the main road into town just outside the outskirts) with her hands bound and makeshift noose around her neck.

Only then did Rima realize the gravity of her mistake. “No, wait, please-“

The truck bed disappeared from under her feet and the noose squeezed her slender neck, choking off any further protest, save for a minute or so of kicking and thrashing. By the time the shocked townspeople reached her, Rima was dangling lifeless and still from the tree.

It took barely 5 minutes for young Rima to go from idealistic protestor to a message from the militia commander. Her body stayed dangling for a week, until the commander decided the townspeople had been well-behaved enough to earn the privilege of burying her.
