In the world before the coup, quiet, dark Louise and brash, fiery-haired Angela had been school-mates, and their fathers fierce academic rivals. Louise bore Angela no real animosity, but Angela deeply envied her understated studiousness that seemed to bring her constant success, while she only ever seemed to struggle, with schoolwork, with holding down a job, despite her family's wealth.
After university, when the old order fell, Angela's father quickly ingratiated himself with the ruling party, earning his daughter an easy commission in the terrestrial army. Meanwhile, Louise's family were labeled as ideological offenders and enemies of the state. The two young women had not seen each other for years, until Angela encountered Louise being brought in as an inmate to the criminal labor camp where she was stationed. All the old jealousy came flooding back in that instant. She couldn't believe her good fortune.
The next morning, patrolling the work detail, Angela singled out Louise in the prison yard. She kicked the slight young woman into the mud, then promptly ordered that the prisoner be punished at the whipping post for splashing said mud on her boots.
To her frustration, after the first ten lashes, Louise remained as silent as Angela remembered from their school days, merely trembling and flinching under the blows. Furious, Angela seized the whip and laid into the prisoner herself, determined to hear at least one good, loud scream...
