Hi,
Firstly thank you Helmut for helping restore our faith in our friends across the pond. I think Eulalia, GDO and others have raised many good points. Our main concern, and certainly not for the first time was what on Earth do people think who were actually there or maybe descendants from the officer in Titanic threatening people with a gun. We get the feeling that producers have been deliberately sniping at us for yonks.

One earns respect by position and status, if good enough, or by hard work and the consent of one’s peers. Eul, you qualify here on all counts.

You may want to be yourself, simple, unadorned, but you are now in the ‘noblesse oblige’ category, like it or not, so what you say and do is given greater respect and attention than others will receive. Enjoy the accolade; you’ve put in some graft to earn it. Accept though that your scope for comment is perforce limited. It won’t ever be personal only unless you make it very clear each and every time.
That’s how the thing works.

I would not want to scare you* or spoil your fun in any way, or that of anyone else, and you haven’t spoilt it for yourself. It’s just that somebody has to be leading and marshalling . . .
* apologies if I have.

In business it’s called ‘management’ and is a necessary task; those doing it are no longer ‘on the shop floor’ as it were. You have, by default, become something of an ‘authority’ figure. Don’t stop being you, but bear in mind the perceptions of 10k of diverse membership may not be what you intend, presume or (maybe?) fear.


There are more ways to be crucified than may appear at first sight; take heart, I’m not out to nail you.

all of us moderators have a bit of a "leadership" role, in making people feel welcome, helping them find their way about, and - occasionally - reminding them of the (very few) things that aren't acceptable, in terms of content or behaviour. But I don't think any of us would want to even hint at a preferred line on matters like historical accuracy in stories or images, that's for members to discuss through friendly, constructive criticism and debates like we're having. In any discussions on the Forums, all of us are equal, the only "authority" is that of the member who can contribute specialist knowledge or experience in a particular topic.
