Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferosity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.
This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
Boatswain, a Dog
who was born in Newfoundland May 1803
and died at Newstead November 18th 1808.

- George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron

Anyone who has known a Newfoundland, or their more numerous cousins, the Labradors, understands what Lord Bryon was saying, and would concur that it is only just tribute!

Here's Boatswain, painted by Clifton Tomson 1808

doesn't look very like a modern-day Newfoundland?
At least the snout's more slender, the head and body less massive,
but the stance is very typical.
Landseer's, a generation or so later, is more familiar:

And here's Boatswain's monument

For those not familiar with the eccentricities of English,
it's pronounced 'Bo'sun', and is the traditional term for what the Navy calls a Petty Officer,
in charge of the crew on deck.
