And there have been more recent trials. It's one of those weird relics of the British Empire that's forgotten most of the time - note it was only when a British policewoman visited the islands and picked up a seriously nasty scent of what was going on that the FCO was reluctantly stirred into action. The constitutional position of the islands is murky, it took the Privy Council to decide that English Law applies there and can bring offenders to justice.

On a happier note, today is Beltane, so let's all celebrate!

Sadly there will be no mass gatherings this year due to the wu flu, which is a real shame as this will be the first time in well over a decade that we haven't been able to participate in this uniquely joyous celebration, so here is a short clip of last year's Beltane festivities in Glastonbury. I was there with my partner Cyndi for this and we took our place in the procession (along with many thousands of others) and despite a drizzly start, the weather turned out really good as the day went on and everybody had a wonderful time.

I's swear that the maypole gets bigger every year - last year's one was enormous as you can see in the video :)

Happy Beltane everybody!

My friend has sent me this link to Beltane at Thornborough in 2018, which she attended and would have been at this year:

Lerner & Loewe's Take:
Tra la, it's May, the lusty Month of May
That lovely month when everyone goes blissfully astray
Tra la, it's here, that shocking time of year
When tons of wicked little thoughts merrily appear
It's May, It's May, that gorgeous holiday
When every maiden prays that her lad will be a cad
It's mad, it's gay, alive, a lust display
Those dreary vows that everyone takes, everyone breaks
Everyone makes divine mistakes
The Lusty Month of May
Whence this fragrance wafting through the air?
What sweet feelings does it's scent transmute?
Whence this perfume floating everywhere?
Don't you know, it's that dear forbidden fruit
It's May, the lusty month of May
That darling month when everyone throws self-control away
It's time to do a wretched thing or two
And try to make each precious day one you'll always rue
It's May, it's May, the month of "Yes, you may"
The time for every frivolous whim, proper or im-
It's wild, it's gay, depraved in every way
The birds and bees with all of their vast amorous past
Gaze at the human race aghast
The Lusty Month of May

That lovely month when everyone goes blissfully astray
Tra la, it's here, that shocking time of year

Here's a great song for the occasion that I particularly love. This is the original German version, which is superior I think;

Quite similar, in many ways, to the fire dance in The Wicker Man 1973

Didn't Saint Walpurga (the first female English author) fight pestilence and plague? Wouldn't it be good to say a prayer to her today?

I love that film so much. A geniune classic that, apart from the ending (which is still capable of terrifying first-time viewers almost half a century after it was made), actually managed to portray modern paganism in a more or less positive light for the time :)

I don't imagine that there will be all that many people in here who haven't seen this film, but if not, then this is the definitive version to watch, not that crappy 2006 travesty with Nicholas Cage.

Fiffty years ago, on May 4th 1970, at Kent State University (Ohio) the National Guard opened fire on students protesting against the war in Vietnam, a few days after President Nixon had announced that American troops had crossed the border with Cambodia. Four students were killed and several wounded. Probably the most memorable of all anti-war protests from that era.

Such a sad day. I was also in college. I still cry when I hear this song.

V.E.DAY May 8th 1945.
75 Years ago,the war in Europe ended, with the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, plus their allies.
Millions died, and their sacrifices, and suffering should not be forgotten. R.I.P.
Lest we forget.

I`ll never forget that day, when the news was announced,we were sent home from school. My parents were both out,so I went up into the attic, recovered an old Union Jack flag and hung it out from the front bedroom window.
