I advise to use USB-sticks for storing such pics (and a second one for back-up), that's much more safe and secure!

That's why I always use two sticks for back-up. Furthermore, USB sticks are small and hence easy to hide, particularly those with 'classified' kinky content, related to this forums!

According to the person fixing it the problem was a (tiny) mosfet which shorted the motherboard.

Is it just this one mosfet or is there more damage on the motherboard? Is your storage a hard disk (HDD) or solid state (SSD), ie essentially a big USB stick? If the motherboard needs replacing you may want to get a new machine, but the storage may be recoverable, you can take it out now load it in a caddy and see if it is readable.

i don't have the Laptop, it's with the mobile repairs chap. He says it's just the one and is now awaiting a replacement.
it's an SSD Laptop.
