While doing a Discord RP set in the modern slavery setting I'm always blathering on about, my attention was drawn to the vague space between the loss of one's freedom and being purchased/put up for rent. Somewhat similar, in a way, to the process by which a farm animal is turned into a product on store shelves... except in that in this case, the product is delivered alive and with full memory of the process, which is likely to be very impactful on them. But, what aspects should that process include, and what form should it take?
So far I've come up with the following, in no particular order.
As for slave management during this period...
So... what am I missing? Does any of the above not make sense? And how should it all fit together?
So far I've come up with the following, in no particular order.
- A full, highly invasive medical exam. And if that's not practical right away, at least a preliminary one to get important facts. (Many slaves will have medical records provided, but independent confirmation is still best.)
- Fingerprinting, and possibly retinal scans and a DNA sample.
- Stripping and sanitisation. (Especially important in these times, you know!)
- Full-body photography, from multiple angles (including formerly private parts).
- Orientation to the process and slavery in general, either in person or by pre-made video.
- Possible interview regarding useful skills and talents, followed by testing of same.
- Assessment by company professionals, determining the best distribution stream (wholesale, rental, retail, auction) and "model" (domestic, labour, secretarial, bed toy etc.), as well as flagging for "adjustment training" as well as other more innocuous sorts of training.
As for slave management during this period...
- Slaves are kept mostly isolated aside from staff, who communicate with them on a strictly "as-necessary" basis. Disobedience (including demanding answers like they're entitled to any)) is strictly punished, starting with an immediate use of the slave's shock collar and getting worse from there. The idea is to condition the slave to obey without needing a reason.
- Slave housing is cramped and uncomfortable, ranging from lockers barely big enough to fit them for temp storage to closet-sized cells for longer-term housing. Of course, all such cells have cameras and microphones allowing for constant surveillance, as well as intercoms and in some cases feeding tubes allowing for slaves to be addressed/fed without opening them. (Speaking of food, it's bland but nutritious slave slop.)
- Slaves are generally either kept naked, or provided with minimal necessary garments. Depending on housing arrangements, they may sometimes be diapered.
- Slaves are generally restrained when being transported from place to place. One common method is by strapping/cuffing them to a backboard mounted on a wheeled dolly, allowing them to be moved around like objects while immobile. Both single and multiple versions of these "slave transporters" exist. (Wouldn't mind some art of this, maybe...)
