Maybe it's red dye #3, and it's banned on both sides of the Atlantic.
(I should check on what gives hair it's color. Every pigment is "natural" in the sense that it's made of chemicals. The question is whether they are produced by organisms. Hair is mostly a protein called "keratin", I think. Color in general depends on how light interacts with various compounds, AND how the molecules are arranged so they reflect or refract various parts of the spectrum. Just another damned thing to try to look up. I have other things on my agenda.
