Hi folks,

this may be a bit (or completely) off-topic,
but assuming that some of the forum's members, at least sometimes, like to watch movies with roman themes
(No, not THESE movies! ;) ),
it could be interesting to collect some opinions about good, acceptable, or at least bearable movies or series.

And to make a start ...
here is my very personal and irrelevant Top 10- hitlist of "roman" movies:

1.) Hannibal (2006)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0766213/
A more or less realistic view to the second Punic War.
Great, just great!

2.) I, Claudius (1976)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074006/
Basing on Graves' great novel.
12 or 13 hours long, but worthy every single minute.

3.) Demetrius and the gladiators (1954)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046899/
A sequel of "The Robe", but according to my humble opinion much better than the first round.
What a romantic movie! And even consisting of some serious psychology.
Well, the happy ending between Claudius and Messalina is not really convincing, but who cares ...
In any case this movie should be used as a propaganda film for Christianity. ;)

4.) King Arthur (2004)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0349683/
Great movie, partly basing on the "Artorius-theory".

5.) Die Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald (1967)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0144962/
God bless Arminius!

6.) Carthage in flames (1960)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054729/
The destruction of Carthage at the end of the third Punic War,
basing on a novel of Emilio Salgari.

7.) Burebista (1980)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080480/
An interesting view to ancient Dacia and to
roman Romania and romanian Romans ...

8.) The last days of Pompei (1959)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054422/
In spite of some abuse of anabolica
a nice movie.
But of course Bulwer-Lytton's novel is much better.

9.) Barabbas (1961)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055774/
At least I had something to laugh ... =))

10.) ???
... No idea ...

Cheers,
Julia

Great collection, thanks a lot!

In particular "Goliath and the sins of Babylon" sounds really romantic.

And so it's time for me to
romanticize romantically about the romanticism of romantic romancers who wrote romantic romances about the Romanism of romantic romanian Romans and romantic roman Romania's Romanesque.

And now I have a knot in my tongue :((

Salve,
Julia

Good idea for a thread Julia, I'm a fan of things Roman, Egyptian and etc. If you ever get a chance to see HBO's "Rome" you might like it, they even had a female crucifixion in Season 2. Not like the stuff you see here but there is no doubt that it's a female. If you like "I Claudius" you'll probably like Rome. Also, I'm waiting to see what they're going to do with all the crucifixions in Spartacus so far they had one gladiator hung on a wall with nails through his wrists.

Yeah,i too would like to see how they handle the mass Cruxing at the end of all that palaver...:D;)
Knowing our rotten luck it'll be all Male-Crux:( (??) But you never know.....
Cheers Baracus

We have just downloaded Season 2 on to our netbook to watch while in Spain on holiday. It's 10 x 1hr episodes each in wmv and approx 350MB each. The quality is excellent. They would be ideal to upload to Ge.tt and I could post the links at the first post on this thread. What do people think?

Just experimenting with episode 1. You should be able to download it from here (valid for 90 days)

There was one Female crucifixion scene in Rome Season 2, Episode 4, at 44:49 Minutes.

The story line as, I recall it, goes:
The three daughters of one of the shows coheros, Vorenus, a Senior Centurion in the Roman Legions are abducted and sold into slavery. His friend a Legionary by the name of Pullo assists him in finding the girls.
As they move into the work site where his daughters are working at forced labor and sex they come upon two crucified slaves, the first of which is obviously a man and they pass him without even a casual glance. They are after all Legionaries who have done their share of such executions, the second however, gives Vorenus cause for concern and he studies her face carefully to assure that it she is not one of his own
As they ride out of the picture the scene closes with a young female torso framing the left side of the picture; the turn of the leg and hip and an exposed breast verify that it was in fact a women giving Vorenus cause for concern.

Thanks for the screenshots. How great a job these high-budget shows could do if they decided to show a crux in graphic detail.

Thanks for the Episode reference. Should now be easy to find and clip it out. Will post the movie clip soon.

I tried downloading it. It said 4 hours to download. I went away and came back 15 minutes later and it said it would take 11 hours to complete the download!

I'm not going to babysit my computer for 12 hours!

or Spartacusspartacus.png

I see from GE.TT that Rome (Season2 Ep 1) has been downloaded or possibly viewed 38 times but I'm no wiser as to whether or not post links to the rest of the episodes.
