Hi folks,
this may be a bit (or completely) off-topic,
but assuming that some of the forum's members, at least sometimes, like to watch movies with roman themes
(No, not THESE movies! ),
it could be interesting to collect some opinions about good, acceptable, or at least bearable movies or series.
And to make a start ...
here is my very personal and irrelevant Top 10- hitlist of "roman" movies:
1.) Hannibal (2006)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0766213/
A more or less realistic view to the second Punic War.
Great, just great!
2.) I, Claudius (1976)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074006/
Basing on Graves' great novel.
12 or 13 hours long, but worthy every single minute.
3.) Demetrius and the gladiators (1954)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046899/
A sequel of "The Robe", but according to my humble opinion much better than the first round.
What a romantic movie! And even consisting of some serious psychology.
Well, the happy ending between Claudius and Messalina is not really convincing, but who cares ...
In any case this movie should be used as a propaganda film for Christianity.
4.) King Arthur (2004)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0349683/
Great movie, partly basing on the "Artorius-theory".
5.) Die Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald (1967)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0144962/
God bless Arminius!
6.) Carthage in flames (1960)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054729/
The destruction of Carthage at the end of the third Punic War,
basing on a novel of Emilio Salgari.
7.) Burebista (1980)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080480/
An interesting view to ancient Dacia and to
roman Romania and romanian Romans ...
8.) The last days of Pompei (1959)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054422/
In spite of some abuse of anabolica
a nice movie.
But of course Bulwer-Lytton's novel is much better.
9.) Barabbas (1961)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055774/
At least I had something to laugh ... =))
10.) ???
... No idea ...
Cheers,
Julia
