THE SENTENCE

The young slave was brought before Gaius Servilius Cepione, the Magistrate who was supposed to issue the sentence on her fate. Zmyrna knew that her crime deserved death, but she hoped that at least it would be a quick death... Unfortunately for her, that was not the case. The magistrate looked at her for a long time, walked around her, touched her flesh. Then looking into her eyes he said to her: "Homicidal and fugitive slave, you will be crucified in the Arena and you will die in atrocious and long torments" then he turned and left the room... leaving her in the hands of her tormentors.

She was still screaming "mercy … have mercy…” as they took her towards the flagellation column…

..BY THE MAGISTRATE..

After a sleepless night, between rapes and torture, with her body marked by whippings and the holes of skewers in her breasts, with her belly still sore from the fire-branded writing FUG which now identified her as a fugitive slave, Zmyrne was chained for a long time chain with shackles on her wrists and ankles, and was forced to wear a dirty rag around her hips, barely covering her pussy.

Then she, accompanied by a legionary and by Odion and Nassor (the two Egyptian Torturers who had been assigned to her) was led to the Magistrate who would decide what punishment she deserved for her horrible crime.

The young slave, exhausted, pained and terrified, heads towards her terrible fate...

WHIP AND SALT

The condemned woman was dragged into the courtyard of the Magistrate’s palace and chained completely naked to the flogging column. As required by the ritual of the death penalty by crucifixion, the condemned slave had to first undergo a ferocious flagellation with the “flagrum”, a short multi-tailed whip. Pieces of bone or metal were knotted to each tail of the whip (usually three or five) and sometimes hooks were attached to the top: all to increase the pain of each lash, which opened sores on the condemned woman’s body.

The part of the body that was flagellated was generally the back and the buttocks, which then in the crucifixion would have been in contact with the wood of the cross and would have increased the suffering of the crucified woman.

Zmyrna suffered at least thirty lashes, slow and terrible, and with each lash the poor girl screamed and begged – in vain – for mercy.

Since Zmyrna’s crime was particularly serious and ignominious and her rank was that of a slave, a further atrocious punishment was applied to her: throughout the flogging and especially afterwards, salt was sprinkled in abundance on her bleeding and open wounds, which they burned deeply, she made her scream in pain even louder, preventing her from passing out...

ENDLESS RAPE

After the flagellation, Zmyrna, exhausted and in pain, was taken back to prison. She would not have been crucified immediately because her mortal torture would have had to be public in the Arena, after the gladiatorial games. Her punishment was unexpected entertainment for the audience and so she had to wait for the appointed day for the games. The slave was then chained again in the prison and her wounds were treated. It was not a gesture of mercy, on the contrary: it was prevented that the wounds becoming infected could lead to the death of the condemned woman who instead had to be crucified, and furthermore the healed wounds would have been reopened by the torturers during the crucifixion, increasing the pain she would have suffered. Meanwhile, for the days in which she remained in prison Zmyrna was raped continuously, day and night, with in particular the use of her mouth... the young girl was not bored...

..AND THE DAY CAME..

After four or five days of captivity, with her body smeared with healing ointments and her mouth full of her rapists' cocks, the date of the new Arena games arrived.

For Zmyrna it was confirmation of his terrible death sentence, for the public of Roman citizens the news of a pleasant and unexpected spectacle together with the gladiator fights.

The slave was then prepared for her final journey: she was made to wear a rag to cover her pussy, the “patibulum” was tied on her back, and she was prepared to leave the prison.

LONGA VIA AD CRUCEM

The dungeon doors opened and a naked, suffering figure of a woman emerged from the darkness. The sounds of her whippings on her flesh and the screams of the young slave could be heard. The two egyptian torturers urged her to walk despite the weight of the "patibulum" already tied to her shoulders: "Move, whore, the road to your crucifixion is long, the Arena is far away!" and laughing at her they whipped her. The girl was desperate and suffering but she knew that this was nothing compared to what she expected, that it would be terrible... or rather she didn’t know it but she feared it... and she was right

Oh yes, the salt on the open wounds was atrocious... and they really did it... in reality my drawings are often a little dramatized but they start from a historical basis... our Roman ancestors were unbeatable in cruelty. Good work

MORTEM IN ARENA

After many lashes and several hundred meters the poor girl was made to enter the Arena, where she would suffer crucifixion for the amusement of the public. Her entrance was greeted by an ovation.

The Nubian slaves responsible for cleaning the Arena were carrying away the corpses of the gladiators who died in the last fight. Everything had to be in place for the spectacle of the execution of Zmyrna's death sentence.

The "stipes" was already lying on the sand, the pole on which the "patibulum" would be attached. The girl saw with horror that near the wood (on which the words "guilty of murder" were already written) there was also a lit brazier with many irons inserted between the embers to make them red-hot, and she imagined that they would use them on her...

She didn't see instead (but she would soon realize it in her own flesh) that a sharp "curnus" was already inserted into the pole, on which they would make her sit...

The show was about to begin!

Among the screams of the public who incited "to death" "crucify her" "make her scream for mercy" the two torturers led the trembling girl in front of the place of the imminent execution.

One of the two Egyptians made her kneel in front of the brazier full of red-hot irons and said to her: "look at the instruments of your torture" and Zmyrna already knew the pain of the red-hot iron, she had already been branded on fire.

Meanwhile the other torturer took the club and her nails from her...

Zmyrna moaned silently, almost without tears, because she understood that her terrible suffering would last hours and hours...

PREPARED FOR THE SHOW

The young slave was now nailed by her wrists to the “patibulum” and moaned continuously. Of course it didn't help her that he was brutally moved to pass the "stipes" underneath her.

That would have been the supporting beam of her poor tortured body, and only in that moment she saw with horror the large and sharp "cornus" that was protruding... it was the one on which she would have been made to sit, they would have inserted that instrument into her anus... but not it was still over, the two torturers had in mind to crucify her in a particularly painful position... they were in fact about to nail her feet too.

ENDLESS PAIN IN THE ARENA

The “patibulum” was nailed to the “stipes” and then the cross was built, with Zmyrna naked and nailed to the wrists screaming and kicking.

The cross still lay on the sand of the Arena and one of the two Egyptian executioners tied the condemned woman's legs together at her knees, while the other crushed them to the left.

They would have nailed Zmyrna's feet in that unnatural position, with a painful twist of the pelvis that would have made her suffer even more with each breath, and then they would have forced her to sit on the “Cornus”.

At that point they would have raised the cross with the condemned woman on it to be seen by the entire public... who enthusiastically followed the work of the two "Tortores"…
