Another Greek legend that gave the Romans ideas for a "girl and bull" spectacle in the arena was that of Dirke, the wicked aunt of Antiope, one of the many girls Zeus had his way with. Antiope fled in shame to King Epopeus of Sicyon, but was forcibly brought back by Lycus, giving birth to twins, Amphion and Zethus, on the way.

Dirke hated Antiope and treated her cruelly after Lycus gave Antiope to her as her slave, until, in time, she escaped again. She fled back to the cave where Amphion and Zethus were born and were now living as young men. They didn't believe her claim to be their mother, and refused her pleas for sanctuary, but when Dirke came to find her and ordered her to be killed, the twins were convinced by the shepherd who raised them that Antiope was their mother. They killed Dirke by tying her to the horns of a bull.

Her punishment is portrayed in a mural on the wall of the House of the Vettii in Pompeii.
The second picture (and detail) shows the way her death might have been re-enacted in front of Nero - the artist is the 19th century Polish painter Henryk Siemiradszki, who specialised in such scenes:
