The Agony Component.

Some historians believe that part of the punishment of crucifixion was exposure to wild animals. Especially in it's original form of simply being tied to an upright post. This may not have been common when it was done along a road near a large city, but in the wilderness of Middle East or the European provinces, things like bears would have been a real hazard.
I don't know if a bear would really attack & eat a human, even a helpless one. But, wolves & wild dogs would be a different matter.

Apparently the black bears in the USA and Canada wiil. Brown bears not so often.
It is said (or so I read) that black bears will actively hunt humans.
The one in the last pic is certainly licking his chops in anticipation, mind you I would be too in his place - Yumm-Yumm, tasty fanny.:D
Liked no 3, wood for a good cross is hard to find, why waste, two for the price of one.:)

WHEN the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride,
He shouts to scare the monster, who will often turn aside.
But the she-bear thus accosted rends the peasant tooth and nail.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
(Rudyard Kipling - and he didn't just mean bears! :p)

Both will on occasion. The black more often once it loses it's fear of humans. Then watch out!! Happly very rare!

I looked it up, there were bears in Europe, and still are. And the reason many crucifixions were on low crosses were to allow bears and other beasts to have lunch.

There was a legendary Roman bandit named Laureolus, who was crucified and became lunch to a wild beast. A favored "play" in the Roman arena was a re-enactment of the event.

Easy for the Games Master to set up, I reckon. Just need a condemned criminal or a Christian, a low cross, and a bear.

sept 11 AD 9. The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest ends in a victory for Germanic tribes. Around 15,000 - 20,000 Roman soldiers died; not only their commander Varus, but also many of his officers are said to have taken their own lives by falling on their swords in the approved manner. Tacitus wrote that many officers were sacrificed by the Germanic forces as part of their indigenous religious ceremonies, cooked in pots and their bones used for rituals. However, others were ransomed, and some of the common soldiers appear to have been enslaved. and In the ancient german woods there were for sure some thousand of them and thus as vengeance ...............................

Apparently not, Shevak. I recall an account of a Christian girl crucified during the persecutions, wherein the mob continued to "outrage" her. As in this Damian image.

I'll throw in another "innocent" render, just because it's more than a bit hot.

So nice of those guards to keep company with these women. They must be bored to death just hanging around! Let's think of some fun things to do to pass the time.

Please satisfy my cruiosity and tell me what that soldier has in his left hand. It looks like a policeman's truncheon.

Centurion: "We cast lots for all your stuff, girl, and look what I've won!"

That object in the centurion's hand looks like a naval truncheon, which will be used to "outrage" her further.

There are none more defenseless as naked women nailed to crosses.

And she's at the perfect height for him to service her properly. He appears to be explaining to the unfortunate lady what's about to happen: "Hey sweetie! Let's play hide the truncheon!"
